Galaxy Gear smartwatch will launch alongside the Galaxy Note 3 on September 4

Check out our review of the Samsung Galaxy Gear smart watch.

We already had a good idea what we’d be seeing at Samsung’s second Unpacked event of the year, scheduled for next week in Berlin, and the Galaxy Note 3 was at the top of the list. The other possibility was for the rumored Galaxy Gear smartwatch to make its debut, and now, thanks to a Samsung executive, its announcement has been confirmed.

The news comes from Lee Young-hee, Vice President of Samsung Mobile, who said in an interview with the Korea Times, “We will be introducing a new wearable concept device called Galaxy Gear at our own event in Berlin on September 4.” This isn’t the first time she has chatted about the Gear either, as in an interview with Bloomberg in March, she was quoted as saying the firm had been working on the watch for sometime.

Sadly, one of the most intriguing rumors surrounding the Galaxy Gear has been debunked, as Lee also states the watch won’t have a flexible display at this point, but we should look out for other models in the future which may. Instead, the Galaxy Gear will, “Enhance and enrich the current smart mobile experience in many ways,” although exactly what these ways are wasn’t said. Samsung is going to be pushing the watch to, “Young trend setters,” so prepare for a flurry of funky ads.

So, it’s time to get excited about the Galaxy Gear. Well, yes, but there is one thing that’s unusual about all this, and that’s the use of the word concept. This implies the product won’t be put on sale, and that it’ll only be for show. We’d be very surprised if Samsung bothered to show a product no-one could buy, and instead wonder if the Gear will initially see a limited release instead. Perhaps it’ll take a leaf out of Google’s book and the way it’s marketing Glass? If so, Gear will have to be something very special to make it worthwhile.

We’ll find out all we need to know on September 4.

Summer memories are here to be made. Unfortunately, we know that for a lot of us that means sitting with people we care about but awkwardly staring at our own phones. That's just today's culture. The new wave of fold style phones that's hitting the market may disrupt that a tad. While they get some criticism for the inevitable crease down the middle — everything has a downside — there's so much to be said about getting extra screen space in a pocket-fittable device. That's why we want to highlight the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 being $450 off while this deal lasts. That's 25% off and takes the $1,800 phone down to $1,350. So, this summer grab our top choice for best foldable phone on a big discount and invite someone over to look at your phone awkwardly... together.

Why you should buy the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is currently the no-brainer pick for Americans looking to go foldable. And that's before it went 25% off. To understand more, you can read in depth about the issue in our assessment of the challenges for foldable phones in 2023. The condensed, spoiler-filled version is that there isn't much variety in foldable phones right now, especially in the Huawei-limited Western market. A reasonable conclusion? If there aren't quality niche producers, you're just getting a sliding scale of quality, and therefore may as well go for the best. Especially when the best is on sale.

Motorola Razr Plus vs. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4: which is the best flip phone?
Renders of the Motorola Razr Plus and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 next to each other.

Foldable phones are making a huge splash right now as more and more smartphone manufacturers start trying their hands at making foldable tech. There are currently two main foldable camps: tablet-like folding phones and flip phone foldables. While larger folding smartphones bring a lot to the table as half-steps of sorts between regular smartphones and tablets, one of the main selling points for flip phone foldables is their portability — especially in the current market, which seems to be constantly moving to larger and larger devices.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 and the Motorola Razr Plus are arguably the two best flip phones on the market right now. Because both phones are so excellent, it can be tough to know which one to buy when looking at them at face value. The Razr Plus, since it's a newer device with a larger cover screen? The Z Flip 4 since Samsung has a much better reputation for quality? No matter what questions you're asking, here's everything you need to know about how the Galaxy Z Flip 4 compares to the Motorola Razr Plus.
