You might think Google has covered all the bases when it comes to apps — it’s hard to think of a mobile software category the company doesn’t have an offering in — but its engineers are still spinning out new ideas. The latest to see the light of day is called Who’s Down, although for the time being you’re going to need an invite before you can start using it.

As you can probably guess from the name of the app, it simply allows you to see which of your friends are free to hang out right now: A simple slider sets your status which is good for three hours. The app lets you specify what type of activity you’re down for — from hitting the gym to grabbing some tacos — and you can chat inside the app with any of your friends who are currently around and available.

“Instantly see which of your friends are free to hang out, right when you are,” reads the app listing on the Play Store. “And with one slider, you can let your friends know you’re down to hang out too. It’s that simple. Always know who is free to hang out, so you never miss out on the fun.” The app is also available to download for free on iOS.

Hold on just a moment though — you need to be studying at a college in the U.S. to be eligible to use the app at the moment (the same strategy Facebook used in its early days). Even if you meet the criteria there’s a waiting list, so your best option is probably to find someone who’s already using it and get them to add you to their trusted circle of contacts.

As yet, Google hasn’t said anything official about the app, so it may be a small-scale experiment that never gets a wider rollout. It’s an interesting idea though and could give the tech giant a small foothold in the social networking space that it’s been trying so hard to get into.

The Google Tasks app just got a big redesign. Here’s what it looks like
Google Tasks August 2024 update shown on Android device.

The Google Tasks app has undergone a significant update, featuring a redesigned look. This update is being rolled out to users and will soon be available on your Android phone.

First revealed in June, the update provides a more polished user experience by replacing the current list format for each task with cards. The bottom bar has been removed; there's a floating action button instead. Furthermore, the three-dot overflow menu is now accessible from each card. The menu sits beside the app's sorting options.

Google Messages is about to make finding group chats so much easier
Google messages versus samsung messages app icons side by side on Galaxy Z Fold 5.

For all its utility, Google Messages has been missing one big feature: the ability to easily search for group chats and send a new message to them. That's about to change. Users running the Google Message beta (version 20240820_00_RC00) can test this feature for themselves, but it's not yet available for everyone.

When you start a new conversation, the "To" field displays your contacts. Before this beta, the field would display only individual people. Even if you had an existing group chat, you wouldn't be able to send a message straight to it from the new message screen. The new feature means you can look for specific group names and participants; in addition, it displays the last message sent to the group.

I tried Google’s new Pixel Studio app, and it’s a mess
A close-up photo of the Pixel Studio app on the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL.

Google's Pixel 9 phones are all about AI. If you watched the company's launch event, there was no way of missing it, as that's almost all Google seemed interested in talking about. Some AI here, a sprinkle of AI there, and an extra touch of AI on top, just to be safe.

One of the many AI features on the Pixel 9 is an app called Pixel Studio. It's an image generator app that allows you to create an image of virtually anything you'd like. You open the app, type in what you want a picture of, and voilà -- Pixel Studio makes it for you. It's not the first app of its kind, but it is the first one shipped on a Google Pixel phone. Unfortunately, it's a dumpster fire.
