Google Maps now shows parking availability in ’25 metro areas’

There’s nothing worse than driving to a busy downtown megaplex and coming to the sudden, horrifying realization that there aren’t any parking spaces in sight. It can easily ruin a night if you’re pressed for time, and that’s why the ever-astute Google is offering salvation: Parking availability alerts in Google Maps.

References to parking alerts were first discovered in a teardown of the beta version of Google Maps by Android Police, but the feature is now live according to Google. The alerts will do exactly what you’d expect it to: Indicate how difficult finding a parking space is likely to be in a given locale. The app will describe congestion in levels of increasing severity — easy, medium, and limited.

Parking availability will be shown through a small “P” icon next to the driving duration estimate. If parking is limited, that icon will turn red.

Google says the feature is rolling out in “25 metro areas” in the U.S.: San Francisco, Seattle, Miami, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York City, Orlando, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Diego, St. Louis, Washington, DC, Cleveland, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, and Houston; as well as Phoenix, Arizona; Portland, Oregon; Sacramento, California; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Tampa, Florida.

The data is based on historical parking data, and Google says it’s similar to how it calculates Popular Times and Visit Duration — with aggregated and anonymized data from users that opt in to Google Location History.

You’ll have to be in one of the 25 metro areas in the U.S. to see the feature in action, and Google doesn’t mention an update so you may just have to wait for a server side switch if you don’t see it yet.

Google has announced several new features in Google Maps to keep you sane this holiday season by helping you avoid crowds, find your way around the malls, and even get your holiday dinner shopping done.

First off, Google is expanding its crowdedness data features for public transit and specific stores into a broader tool that it's calling "Area Busyness." This will show you how many folks are gathering in a specific neighborhood, rather than an individual store. As Google explains, you can use this information however you like, whether you want to steer clear of the crowds or seek out the hottest spots in town.

The Pixel Fold’s no-show is a massive missed opportunity for Google

The Google Pixel Fold and all its tantalizing potential remain a rumor, as only the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro were on show during the company’s October 19 event. I’m not saying the Pixel 6 isn’t good enough. Not at all -- it certainly appears to have all the right ingredients to push Google smartphones forward compared to previous models.

But what they don’t do is push the mobile hardware industry forward, at least not in the same way a folding smartphone would. At a time when interest in folding smartphones is at its highest, Google has missed a golden opportunity.
Fold me once, Google
Google has made attractive, colorful, and apparently extremely capable new smartphones with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. They both look like they have good cameras, an interesting new processor, and a design that doesn’t threaten to put me into a coma -- all at a very competitive price. Unfortunately, the same can usually be said about a new OnePlus, Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, or Oppo phone right after launch, so although these are big steps for Google, they’re not really unusual in the wider industry.

Google Pixel Fold might steal the show from the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro

Google is launching the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro this fall, but the company might have kept its strongest card close to its chest. The so-called Pixel Fold, reported to be the company's first foldable, is said to be heading to market before the end of the year -- around Q4 2021, or October to December. These reports stem from often reliable sources including display analysts, Evan Blass, otherwise known as @evleaks on Twitter, and code found in Google's upcoming Android 12.1.
