Google’s latest Playmoji bring animated Pokémon to your camera

Pokémon seems to have gotten a bit of a resurgence over the past few years. While true fans have long kept up with the latest Pokémon games and movies, it really hit the mainstream again with Pokémon Go, and now it’s set to do the same with the release of Pokémon: Detective Pikachu.

In celebration of the new movie, Google is releasing a Pokémon: Detective Pikachu Playmoji pack — which includes Detective Pikachu, Charizard, Jigglypuff, and Mr. Mime — many of the most important and cutest characters from the movie.

“Now you can partner up with Detective Pikachu, Charizard, Jigglypuff, and Mr. Mime to create action-packed scenes in the real world. All you have to do is point your camera and drop one of the Playmoji (or all four) into a scene to bring them to life in your photos and videos,” Google said in a blog post.

The Playmoji are animated and look mostly like they will in the film — adding to a sense of realism to them. Thanks to the motion tracking in Google’s ARCore, the characters can move around your environment.

If you’re unfamiliar with Playmoji, they’re primarily augmented reality characters and objects that you can experience through the Google Pixel camera or Google Lens app. With Playmoji, you can interact with the characters themselves, or take photos and videos with them. Popular Playmoji that we have seen so far include the likes of Childish Gambino, and Google even partnered up with Marvel Studios for Playmoji of Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, and the other Avengers. For Valentine’s Day, Google released a pack of “Playground: Love” Playmoji, which included love notes, hearts, and more.

In general, the Google Pixel camera has been hailed as one of the best around, thanks largely to the incredibly smart artificial intelligence under the hood. The camera offers features like the newly released Night Sight, which can smartly brighten up poorly lit photos. While other flagship phones offer multiple cameras to get these features, the Google Pixel series is able to accomplish it with only one lens thanks to its machine learning.

Can Google’s Pixel 6 Pro camera beat the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra? I found out
Galaxy S21 Ultra and Pixel 6 Pro.

The Google Pixel 6 Pro's camera has a lot of consumer expectations behind it given the Pixel 5's success and the new Tensor processor, but it also faces a lot of work to do to compete against the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the best camera Samsung has ever put on a phone. I took both the Samsung and Google phone out for the day to take a selection of photos, to answer the question: Which Android flagship has the best camera?
Camera specs and testing procedure
The Google Pixel 6 Pro's 50-megapixel main camera is joined by a 48MP telephoto camera with 4x optical zoom, plus a 12MP wide-angle camera. How about the Galaxy S21 Ultra? It was released in January 2021, but still has an enviable specification with a 108MP main camera, a 12MP wide-angle, a 10MP telephoto camera for 3x optical zoom photos, and a 10MP periscope camera for 10x optical zoom photos.

For this comparison, photos were taken back-to-back using the automatic mode, meaning all I did in most cases was press the shutter button. I tested the main camera, wide-angle, optical zoom, portrait, and night modes, but not video. All photos have been compared on a color-calibrated monitor, then resized for a friendlier online viewing experience. Do remember this when looking at the examples below.

Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro confirm powerful Tensor processor and triple cameras
Google Pixel 6 Image Composite.

Google officially released the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro today at its Pixel Fall Launch event. Google’s latest Pixel phones are the most advanced devices Google has released so far, with notably better cameras, better graphics, and a more advanced chip. Read on to learn all about the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, including details on each model’s design, camera features, specs, pricing, and availability.
Pricing and availability
The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are available for purchase now. The Pixel 6 retails for a starting price of $599, and the Pixel 6 Pro starts at $899. You can buy one on Google's site today. It'll also be available for pre-order on AT&T starting October 19. New and existing customers can get the Pixel 6 Pro for up to $700 off with a trade-in and the Pixel 6 for $15/month without a trade-in.
A new design

With many new phone releases, you won't notice much of a difference in design at first glance. The Pixel 6, however, looks quite different from previous models right off the bat. The most noticeable difference is the rear camera, as the camera bump is thicker (it's more of a ridge) and goes all the way across the back of the phone instead of sitting in the upper-left-hand corner like on the Pixel 5a 5G and the Pixel 4a.

Google Pixel 6 Pro camera samples leak online yet again ahead of launch
Google Pixel 6 Image Composite.

Google's Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are launching in a matter of weeks, but a new leak today just showcased what will be the phone's killer feature: Its camera. The report comes from Brandon Lee, a YouTuber with access to a preproduction Google Pixel 6 Pro who has provided earlier Pixel 6 Pro leaks on pricing and color names.

Now, there are quite a few caveats here. First, the photos come sourced from, as already said, preproduction hardware from a source in Nigeria. It's not quite clear if the software on the phone being used is the same as what Google is going to push out, nor is the photographer (or weather conditions) amenable to showcasing the best of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Finally, we're only seeing the Pixel 6 photos through compressed social media posts, rather than in their full quality. It's best to think of this as giving you an idea of what Google's next phone can do, rather than being a true indicator.
