Holographic Handsets Coming Soon

Okay, so it’s not the holodeck of Star Trek fame. But it’s one step closer. Ever wanted 3D on your phone? Pretty soon it will be possible, as Indian tech company Infosys has patented a a device that can process, send and receive 3D holographic images.

It takes a series of 2D shot, and uses algorithms to build them into a 3D picture. That data, still unprocessed, is sent, and built into a 3D image when received, thanks to a laser-sourced projector and micro holographic optical elements lenses, and without a loss of resolution, according to silicon.com

An Infosys spokesperson said:

"Holographic handsets have the capability of enriching the user experience, with an actual 3D experience and higher-quality images. This gives users a more realistic experience in areas like gaming, medicine, movies etc."

The devices are expected to be on the market by 2010.
