Is it the Honor Honor Pad 2, or just the Pad 2? Either way, Honor has a new tablet

honor pad 2 news
Honor, the smartphone brand which shares technology with Huawei, has announced several new devices at an event in China. The new Honor 6X smartphone took center stage, but it was joined by the Honor S1 smartwatch and a tablet called the Honor Pad 2. Does this, rather clumsily, make it the Honor Honor Pad 2? Or is it the Honor Pad 2? At the moment, it’s one of the great unsolved mysteries of our time.

Huawei also recently revealed a new tablet, the MediaPad M3, which we really like; but sadly the Honor Pad 2 doesn’t quite meet the strong specifications offered by the Huawei machine. Instead, it’s closer to Huawei’s MediaPad M2 from 2015. There are two versions, one with Wi-Fi and the other with an LTE modem for on-the-move tablet fun. It has an 8-inch display on the front, and the resolution is 1920 x 1200 pixels, ideal for showing off Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Honor’s user interface over the top.

Honor has chosen a Qualcomm processor to power the Honor Pad 2. It’s the Snapdragon 616, backed up with 3GB of RAM, and a choice of either 16GB or 32GB storage space. A MicroSD card slot can be used to increase this amount. There are a pair of cameras, an 8-megapixel cam on the rear, and a 2-megapixel camera on the front, plus a 4,800mAh battery to keep the whole thing going.

No, it’s not the most exciting specification, but the design is pleasing, and the price is very attractive. The 16GB model with Wi-Fi is the equivalent of $150, while the top-of-the-range LTE 32GB version is around $220. At the moment, like the Honor 6X and the Honor S1, the Honor Pad 2 has only been announced for release in China. Honor does sell its hardware internationally, so there’s a chance one, two, or all three of these devices will see a wider release in the future.

The OnePlus Pad looks incredible — except for one peculiar thing
OnePlus Pad held in hand.

For years, there has been talk about OnePlus releasing a tablet. That day has finally come, and OnePlus now has the OnePlus Pad, which is officially launching on May 8. I’ve been using one for the past few weeks, and for the most part, the tablet looks great — though the software is a bit lacking.

However, I have some qualms about OnePlus’ decision to place a single, large camera sensor right smack dab in the top middle of a tablet that is designed for horizontal use. How did this not bother whoever came up with it? Maybe I’m using my tablets wrong, but I doubt it.

This new Android tablet has an e-ink screen that destroys the Kindle
Tab C Ultra by Onyx

Onyx is one of the few brands that seem bullish about the potential of e-ink screens, and it makes fairly impressive products while at it. I recently got my hands on the Onyx Boox Tab Ultra with a monochrome e-ink display and was pleasantly surprised by its unique appeal. Now, the company is taking a big leap with a new variant that replaces the black and white screen with a full-color e-ink panel on its latest tablet — something the Kindle has never been able to achieve.

Say hello to the Onyx Boox Tab Ultra C, an Android tablet that stands out with its 10.3-inch color e-ink screen. This one boosts the resolution to 2480 x 1860 pixels, offering a higher pixel density compared to its monochrome sibling. Onyx has deployed what it calls a Kaleido3 screen on its latest tablet, which promises “soothing and soft tones.” The electronic ink panel looks and feels more like a newspaper than a glossy screen and also happens to be easier on the eyes without minimal risks of visual fatigue.
