How to turn off Google Assistant

Google Assistant is one of the coolest and most helpful features in Google’s suite of products, but it can be a little overbearing at times. Whether it’s answering to commands from the TV or potentially listening in to private conversations, you’ll want to tell Google Assistant to take a break sometimes.

Beyond turning off Google Assistant, there’s also plenty of ways you can customize how it interacts with you. We’ll cover everything you need to know in this guide.

How to turn off Google Assistant

If you want to completely deactivate Google Assistant on one of your devices, it’s easy to do. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Google app on your phone.
  2. Tap on More at the bottom-right.
  3. Tap on Settings.
  4. Tap on Google Assistant.
  5. Scroll down to Assistant Devices (or Devices on some phones, like the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE), and tap on Phone or any other device you have listed where you want to turn Google Assistant off.
  6. Tap the Google Assistant toggle to turn it off.

You can also just say, “Hey Google, turn yourself off,” to get directions on how to do it.

How to tweak your Google Assistant settings

You can tweak all sorts of different settings in the Google app if you go to More > Settings > Google Assistant as we showed you above, but what if you want to turn off specific triggers?

Sometimes Google Assistant will pick up your voice even if you’re not issuing a command, so it can be frustrating around the house. An ideal solution is to set the app preferences so it’ll only pick up voice commands when you’re in the car. Here’s how to do that on a Samsung Galaxy phone — the path will be slightly different on a different device.

  1. Go to Settings and tap Apps.
  2. Tap the Three Vertically-Stacked Dots at the top-right for more options, and tap Default apps.
  3. Tap on Device Assistance App (or Assist App).
  4. There are various settings you can change here, and they’ll be different depending on your device. For example, the Galaxy S20 has the option to turn off on-screen text or image analysis, but the Pixel 3 has the option to turn off Active Edge here, which is a feature that allows you to squeeze the phone to launch Google Assistant.
  5. Tap the Gear icon to dig deeper and access more options. Tap Voice Match.
  6. You can now toggle off Access with Voice Match but leave on While Driving.

How to temporarily turn off Google Assistant on smart home devices

Maybe you have a smart speaker, smart display, or smart clock, and you want to turn Google Assistant off temporarily or you want to turn it off regularly at specific times. You can change the Google Home preferences in Downtime to have Google Assistant available at certain times or for specific devices. Here’s how:

  • Open the Google Home app.
  • Tap Home and select a device.
  • Tap the Settings gear icon.
  • Tap Digital Wellbeing > New Schedule.
  • Pick all the devices you want to apply it to, then tap Next.
  • Pick the days and choose a ready-made schedule or create a custom schedule, then tap Next.
  • Choose start and end times, then Next > Done.

If you change your mind, it’s easy to reverse any of these settings by following the same path. Bear in mind that Google Assistant is improving all the time. We have a great overview of the voice commands you can use to get the most out of your smart device.

Does the Pixel 6a have an SD card slot? How the phone handles expandable storage
The back of the Google Pixel 6a. It's a close-up shot focusing on the phone's rear camera bar.

In a perfect world, every smartphone would come with some form of expandable storage — including phones like the Google Pixel 6a. People take so many selfies, pictures, and videos on their phones, as well as download games and apps that can eat up a load of storage space. Unfortunately, as useful as expandable storage with SD cards can be, very few phones still have them today.

In the case of Google, specifically, it's never supported MicroSD card expansion for its Pixel devices. Whether it be the original Pixel from 2016 or last year's Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, we've never seen a Pixel with an SD card slot. Now that the Pixel 6a has been released into the wild, can you expect it to have an SD card slot that its predecessors were missing? Sadly, the answer is no. The Pixel 6a does not have an SD card slot.

How to pre-order the Google Pixel 6a right now
The Google Pixel 6a. We see the back of the phone as it's laying on top a piece of wood.

We love a good midrange smartphone, and they don't get much better than Google's Pixel A range. Ever since the launch of the range with the Pixel 3a, Google's cut-price offerings have dominated the midrange Android market with a flagship-level camera, good performance, and excellent software support. Of course, they've rarely been the most attractive of options out there -- but that looks to be at an end with the Pixel 6a's release.

With the Tensor processor, an excellent camera, and the Pixel 6's distinctive design, it's clear Google is pulling out all the stops for the Google Pixel 6a. But where can you pre-order this new midrange king? We've checked the biggest carriers and retailers to find where you can reserve your new smartphone.

Google Assistant to forget its location-based reminders
Google Pixel 6a

Google Assistant has been losing features over the past several months and two more are gearing up to be quietly cut. Assignable reminders and location-based reminders will be sunset "soon" according to the Google Assistant support page. This might be a tricky change for people who have been relying on the features since they were introduced in 2019.

Assignable reminders are a great way to divide tasks among groups of people as they reduced the number of assignments and notifications individuals received when collaborating with others. Additionally, location-based reminders offered a similar kind of help but instead of simply assigning each notification to a single person, they allowed everyone in a specific area to share tasks. Now, both features will be cut at an unspecified future date.
