Huawei’s P50 Pro Plus has an even more unusual camera bump than we expected

Huawei is gearing up to launch the P50-series of smartphones soon. While we’ve seen leaks and renders of the presumably cheaper and not-as-cool P50 and P50 Pro, the P50 Pro Plus has been a bit camera shy — at least until now. Now, new renders from leaker HoiIndi shared on Twitter have given us a good look at the phone, especially its outlandish rear. The Huawei P50 Pro Plus may have the same oval-shaped camera enclosure we see in the smaller phones, and these renders show off the finer details obscured by earlier ones.

We can see Leica branding, as expected from Huawei, written vertically on the bump, and from what we can see it looks to be a five-camera affair, likely sporting an ultrawide and a telephoto in addition to the two extra lenses. Around the front is a very minimal design. The same very small hole-punch selfie camera as we’ve seen in the P50 and P50 Pro leaks makes a return, and the screen appears to have very slim bezels for an immersive experience.

Details are still very sparse on what’s going to be in this phone, but we can start with the Mate 40 and work upwards from there if we had to guess. A periscope zoom is almost a given, seeing as Huawei pioneered the technology with the P30 Pro, and further advancements to its video-related technology too. Inside, expect a high-end Kirin processor, and an AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. It’s possible the phones will also be the first release of Huawei’s HarmonyOS, at least in the Chinese market. In other markets, buyers should expect this phone to ship with a Gooogle-less version Android, as all Huawei phones currently do.

Huawei’s usual camera superiority will be challenged greatly in 2021, with the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra proving itself to be exceptionally capable, along with the excellent Oppo Find X3 Pro, and new partnerships from OnePlus and Hasselblad, plus Vivo and Zeiss. The Huawei P50-series would, in normal times, be launching at the end of March, but with that window closing fast, the P5o Pro Plus is expected to debut alongside the P50 and P50 Pro sometime in May.

Huawei’s clamshell foldable looks more like a high-fashion gizmo
HUAWEI P50 pocket breaks cover

Huawei recently started dropping teasers for its first clamshell-style foldable phone. The company then went a step ahead and revealed a practical yet rather cliched name for it — Huawei P50 Pocket. The phone is going official later this month, but Harper’s Bazaar China got a first-look with a glamorous photoshoot and shared the results on social media. In one word, the phone looks extravagant. Folks with a conservative taste will classify it as luxuriously garish.

The Huawei foldable retains the DNA of its P50 flagship sibling, thanks to two huge circular cutouts at the back. The one at the top appears to house three camera lenses and the LED flash. Below it sits a circular secondary display that will likely show notifications and also serve as a viewfinder for clicking selfies using the high-resolution rear snappers. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Motorola’s RAZR 5G also come armed with the same trick.

Huawei’s P50 Pro launches with 200x camera zoom, but leaves out 5G

Huawei has launched the Huawei P50 and Huawei P50 Pro, its flagship smartphones for 2021, in China. Huawei has always captured hearts with its impressive camera systems, and the P50 Pro is no exception, plus there’s no chance you’ll mistake the phone for any other due to its distinctive design. However, neither P50 series phones have 5G connectivity, which is something of a shock for a top-spec 2021 smartphone.

There’s also the question about whether either P50 model will ever be released outside China. That’s not known at the moment, but in the meantime let’s take a closer look at what we do know about the new Huawei P50 series.
Huawei P50 Pro
The back of the Huawei P50 Pro is dominated by what looks like two large, circular cameras, but these are actually glass modules that hold multiple camera lenses. The unusual design certainly stands out. They contain a main 50-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), a 40MP monochrome camera, a 13MP ultra-wide camera, and a 64MP telephoto camera. The telephoto camera can apparently shoot at up to 200x zoom, but it's not known what optical zoom levels are featured.

Huawei’s striking P50 smartphone exists, but the company can’t launch it yet
huawei p50 launch delayed news series teaser

Huawei has teased the Huawei P50 smartphone series, but it is not in a position to provide a launch date for the phone yet. The phone was briefly previewed at the end of Huawei’s “Live Smart With Huawei” event streamed online on June 2, where the first major release of HarmonyOS was detailed, along with new products running the software including the Huawei Watch 3.

Moments before the event ended, Huawei Business Group CEO Richard Yu said, “Consumers around the globe have been looking forward to our next flagship smartphone,” before playing a brief teaser video showing the Huawei P50’s unique design. It’s close to some of the rumors about the phone which have appeared over the last few months, with striking dual circular camera modules on the back. The top module contains three cameras, and the lower module has one, along with a flash unit.
