Apple’s new handsets helped it dominate Christmas period

Apple had a bumper Christmas this year with its devices accounting for more than half of all activations globally, according to Flurry data.

The mobile analytics firm found that Apple smartphones and tablets accounted for 51.3 percent of all device activations from December 19 to 25, a figure almost three times greater than that of Samsung, which reached 17.7 percent. Microsoft came in third with a 5.8 percent share, thanks mainly to Lumia devices.

“To put this in perspective, for every Samsung devices that was activated, Apple activated 2.9 devices. For every Microsoft Lumia device activated, Apple activated 8.8 devices,” Flurry’s Jarah Euston wrote in a post Monday, adding that after Microsoft, only LG and Sony managed to achieve a market share in excess of 1 percent across the 7-day period.

Flurry arrived at its numbers by analyzing data from downloads linked to the 600,000 apps it tracks.

Euston said that despite this year’s holiday season proving somewhat lackluster for tech manufacturers in terms of sales, the newly released iPhone 6 and 6 Plus handsets helped Apple to score big in December.

Additionally, Christmas saw a significant increase in the number of phablets activated globally, with the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus helping to drive the figure.

“In the week leading up to Christmas, 13 percent of new device activations were phablets compared to just 4 percent in 2013,” Euston wrote, adding, “In fact, the iPhone 6 Plus was one of the top 5 devices Flurry saw activated for Christmas; the iPhone 6 was number 1.” Flurry defines a phablet as a device with a screen size of between 5 and 6.9 inches.

Euston also noted that the phablet’s increasing share of the market appears to come at the expense of full-sized tablets and to a lesser extent small tablets.

With the iPhone 14 in trouble, here’s how Apple can save the iPhone 15

Apple’s iPhone, once lauded for its simplicity by only offering one model in different storage capacities, is more complicated than ever before. We've had at least four different versions to choose from ever since the iPhone 12 series, with the current iPhone 14 lineup offering the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

But one of those is not like the other, because it appears to be a technological flop. Yes, I’m talking about the iPhone 14 Plus. This is the model that Apple axed the mini size for, and it was an odd choice that I’ve been questioning ever since Apple made the official announcement. The failure of the iPhone 14 Plus is also of concern at Apple headquarters, as the company is reportedly looking at ways to re-strategize the iPhone 15 lineup in 2023.

But if this is your first iPhone or iPad, and you’ve never used one before, or maybe you’re switching from Android, fret not! It may be a little overwhelming figuring everything out, but here are some tips and tricks to get the most out of your shiny new iPhone.

The 5 worst iPhones of all time
The Apple iPhone SE (2022) and Apple iPhone SE (2020) together.

Apple debuted the original iPhone in 2007, and we’ve come a long way, as demonstrated by 2022's iPhone 14 lineup. There are 38 total iPhones that have come out in 15 years, and more coming with each year that passes.

But as great as the iPhone is as a whole, it’s never perfect. Some iPhones are clear winners ... while others have been big flops. Here are five of the worst iPhones of all time, and a look at how they made this list.
