Isis wireless payment system launches with the backing of AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile

Isis NFC Payments

Another new player in the world of mobile payments has launched nationally this week, this time with the blessing of AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. It’s called Isis and the system has been undergoing public trials for more than a year, and has finally been judged ready for the big time.

Well, big-ish time, as you’re still going to need a specific smartphone to enjoy Isis, and jump through a few hoops before trying it out. First up, your phone needs to have NFC, which isn’t so much of a problem as it was a few years ago, but does restrict Isis to approved Android phones. The list includes the HTC One, Galaxy S4, LG G2, and various Droid phones on Verizon.

Then you need a special SIM card with upgraded security options from your network, before finally downloading the Isis Mobile Wallet app from the Google Play store, and adding a supported credit card. Even then, according to AT&T’s press release, you’ll still need to visit the card issuer to approve its use on your phone.

So, if you’ve got the right phone, been to see your network and the bank, and met all the other criteria, you’ll be ready to pay for stuff using your phone. So where should you go? Apparently, partner stores include Macy’s, Walgreens, Radio Shack, Jamba Juice, and logically enough, AT&T’s stores too. Coca-Cola has partnered with Isis to offer free drinks from certain vending machines when using Isis to pay, and if you use Amex’s Serve digital wallet, you can get 20 percent back on certain purchases.

Will Isis catch on, when success has eluded those which have preceded it? Only time will tell, but we think a lot of the hassle needs to be filtered out before we all start paying for our weekly shopping using a phone.

Prices are climbing steadily, and while we can cite many reasons why, the most important thing to note is that, for at least the next couple of years -- and maybe even longer -- we'll be looking at elevated prices for a lot of goods and services. That means that if you have a chance to lock in reasonable prices, particularly for something you pay for regularly, you'll want to take advantage. And that's precisely what Verizon Wireless is offering via its Welcome Unlimited Plan. Not only can you join America's most reliable 5G nationwide network -- according to Rootmetrics -- but also you can lock in that price for three years. For families with four or more lines, the savings stack up. With four lines, you could be paying just $25 per line per month for the next three years. To take advantage of these low prices, you'll need to bring your phone with you, and that's true for both new and existing customers looking to snag a Verizon Wireless plan. You'll have to hurry though, the offer is only available for a limited time.

Here's how it works: You must switch to Verizon, bring your own phone -- and your phone number too -- and activate at least one new line on the Welcome Unlimited plan. If you are an existing customer already on the same plan, you can take advantage of this offer when you add a new line and bring your phone. You'll get the Welcome Unlimited plan, which offers Unlimited 5G nationwide talk, text, and data access for all new lines. The offer price includes an additional $10 per line discount when you sign up for paper-free billing and auto pay, but it's a bit more expensive if you want to get your bills in the mail or disable autopay. Either way, that's an excellent price, and the three-year price guarantee means that cost won't increase on you for quite a while, which is a huge game-changer in this day and age.

It’s late 2022, and Verizon and AT&T still can’t beat T-Mobile’s 5G network

It’s been 10 months since Verizon and AT&T flipped the switch on their new C-band 5G spectrum, but it appears both carriers still have their work cut out for them if they want to catch up to T-Mobile.

Market analyses and independent tests have agreed for years that T-Mobile is the fastest and most reliable 5G carrier in the U.S. That’s not surprising as it had a massive advantage by holding licenses for the crucial midrange spectrum that provides the best balance between range and speed. While Verizon’s early high-frequency mmWave rollouts allowed it to boast raw speeds that were significantly faster, those were confined to about 1% of its subscriber base.
