Mozilla means business with the mid-range KDDI Fx0 Firefox phone

japan kddi fx0 firefox phone news os
It isn’t every day you see a Firefox phone, and it’s even rarer to find one with decent specifications. Mozilla’s Firefox OS runs Web apps on mobile devices and sets the Firefox Web browser as default. A handful of Firefox OS devices are available in European, Asian, and South American countries, but so far not one of them has powerful specifications. Until now, that is. Japan’s KDDI Fx0 is a solid, mid-range Firefox smartphone.

Wireless carrier KDDI announced the Fx0 in conjunction with Mozilla just a few days before its Christmas Day launch date. The Fx0 is the first Firefox phone to support 4G LTE, sport a relatively fast Qualcomm processor, and feature an HD screen. While it’s certainly not the high-end monster phone Mozilla would have you believe, the Fx0 is the most powerful Firefox phone to date.

The Fx0 comes with a 4.7-inch IPS HD screen, and is powered by a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor along with 1.5GB of RAM. Users will have 16GB of storage to fill up before popping in a MicroSDXC card into the phone for more space. An 8-megapixel back camera and a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera round out the mid-range specs. The entire device gets its juice from a 2,370mAh battery.

Although a Firefox phone with mid-range specs is enough of a talking point already, the Fx0’s design is sure to turn some heads. The phone’s casing is completely transparent, giving you an unobstructed view of all the muted gold-brushed components. The circuitry, battery pack, and just about everything else is clearly visible. The result is a chic, mechanical device that looks like a fancy Swiss watch that lets you see its movement in action.

No price was mentioned, but if Mozilla sticks to its guns, the Fx0 should be a relatively affordable device when it arrives in the carrier’s online shop on December 25. Other shops and retailers will receive the phone on January 6, 2015.

I record interviews for work. These are my favorite free recorder apps

Before you head to the app store on your phone to buy a voice-recording app, take a moment to consider the apps that may already be installed on your phone. Why? In my experience, they're likely all you really need. I’ve recorded interviews and voice-overs for work for years, and I’ve found the two best examples come preinstalled on your phone already, so they’re entirely free to use.

Google Pixel Tablet just got its first big discount and it’s worth a look
Google Pixel Tablet on its charging dock.

Tablets are a dime-a-dozen these days, with offerings from all the great brands including Apple, Samsung, Lenovo, and more. So, if you really want to stand out in a sea of similar tech, you need to do things a little differently. That's what Google's Pixel Tablet offers. How? It comes with a unique speaker dock that can be used to both charge the device and offer room-filling sound -- almost like a smart speaker add-on. Better yet, when your Pixel Tablet is docked it benefits from the Hub Mode, turning the device into a smart display, with digital photo frame support, smart home controls, and hands-free Google functionality. Of course, it could set you back at full price, normally $499 unless you find it included in a roundup of the best Google Pixel deals. Well, guess what? Thanks to a Best Buy Google Pixel Tablet deal, you can get it today for $439 and save $60. Hurry, though, it's part of Best Buy's recent 48-hour sale so it won't stick around for long.

Why you should buy the Google Pixel Tablet
Okay, okay, so in our Google Pixel Tablet review, Joe Maring did give it less than stellar remarks, but he called out its reliable fingerprint sensor, comfortability during use and excellent speaker dock. Honestly, how many tablets come with a matching speaker dock that transforms the entire experience? This tablet also marks a "lot of firsts" for Google, as it's the first tablet from the company in nearly five years, the first Android tablet in eight years, and can be converted into a smart home display with the speaker dock. All of which are notable milestones.
