Levitate your phone while you charge it wirelessly with the OvrCharge

Unless you’re really running short of things to talk about, the latest phone charger you’ve bought isn’t exactly the kind of thing you’re going to be in a rush to show off. That could change if a certain new Kickstarter campaign hits its funding target, however.

The so-called OvRcharge is not only a wireless charger, but one that will actually levitate your smartphone as it charges: suspending it in the air with no support other than invisible magnetic fields — all while slowly spinning it around like it’s on an invisible Lazy Susan.

“It’s a one of a kind charger,” AR Designs’ founder and CEO Rukhsana Perveen tells Digital Trends. “It consists of two main technologies: electromagnetism and induction. Electromagnetism is responsible for maintaining its altitude and balance, [while] induction is for wireless power transfer.”

Given that magnets are used for both the levitating and wireless charging process, it’s a pretty neat idea to combine both into one attention-grabbing device. Since a regular comment we’ve heard about wireless charging is that it’s not really wireless at all (since the base unit still has to be plugged in) it’s also a bit like a magic trick — managing to charge your smartphone quite literally through the air.

“The two primary issues involved in magnetic levitation are lifting forces: providing an upward force sufficient to counteract gravity, and stability: ensuring that the system does not spontaneously slide or flip into a configuration where the lift is neutralized,” Perveen continues. “Our team took that challenge, and today we are here with OvRcharge.”

Right now the campaign is almost three-quarters of the way to its funding goal. If this concept grabs you, you can sweep in and pre-order one of the chargers with the $229 CAD ($175) Early Bird OvRcharge Ultra, which will get you a complete set consisting of charger, one charge case, and a power adapter.

Estimated delivery is this December. All things being equal that means that you’ll be able to spend the holiday season dazzling friends and family with your fancy new levitating phone trick!

Google Pixel 6 Pro in hand.

Android 13 has been hotly anticipated for months, but following its rollout to Pixel users last Monday, many have been reporting issues with wireless charging. As first spotted by 9to5Google, Pixel owners have been posting their issues to Reddit in hopes of finding a simple community fix, but based on the number of complaints, there seems to be more at work.

While the hope is always that companies like Google will put their best foot forward when launching new software, sometimes new bugs are found after pushing an update globally. If your Pixel is having trouble with wireless charging, don't worry: you're not alone.

Does the OnePlus 10T have wireless charging? What you need to know
The side of the OnePlus 10T showing the power key.

OnePlus has launched the OnePlus 10T, marking the return of its T-series lineup after last year’s hiatus. While the new midrange smartphone offers some impressive specs, there’s one crucial thing you may want to keep in mind about the OnePlus 10T before you rush out and hit the buy button.

Although wireless charging is arguably table stakes on midrange and premium smartphones in 2022, the OnePlus 10T is a surprising exception to this rule. Like its predecessor, the 2020 OnePlus 8T, this latest T series smartphone lacks any form of wireless charging.

For a more budget-friendly device, the Google Pixel 6a is packed with features. Ever since the introduction of the Pixel A series, Google has impressed its fans by offering a cheaper version of its flagship smartphone line that still holds its own against other competing devices despite the reduced price. The Pixel 6a is no exception, but despite how much it's able to do, it doesn't have all of the features you would expect from a regular Pixel 6 or 6 Pro -- namely, wireless charging.

As phones have become essential devices for many people across the world, battery features like fast and wireless charging are hotly requested when new devices launch. A big question many have been asking about the Pixel 6a is in regards to its wireless charging options. Previous Pixel A phones haven't supported it, but as Google's budget devices tout more impressive specs with each release, some are hoping that the 6a will be the first in the series to have it.
