Lowrance Debuts iWay 350c GPS Unit

Lowrance Electronics, a maker of GPS products, yesterday announced a new addition to their iWay line of multimedia automotive GPS devices. The iWay 350c, which just won “Best New Mobile Electronics Entertainment Product for 2006” at the SEMA 2005 Show in Las Vegas, is set to be available for $499.

The iWay 350c, Lowrance Electronics said, boasts a sunlit-viewable 3.5” color TFT touch-screen display and 16-channel GPS+WAAS location navigation via a built-in antenna. It has a 4GB hard drive which holds NAVTEQ turn-by-turn data for the continental U.S. and Canada, including over 5 million points of interest. Navigation directions are given to the driver by voice.

Other features of the iWay 350c include built-in battery power for up to 15 hours of life, a built-in stereo MP3 player, a SD/MMC media card slot, JPEG picture viewer and a built-in FM transmission modulator to listen to driving directions or music over a car’s radio.

Accessories included with the iWay 350c are a suction-cup mounting bracket, 12 vDC power adapter, USB to PC interface cable, soft protective cover and micro-fiber touch-screen cleaning cloth.

“The new iWay 350c won the only electronics category award at the SEMA show, competing against in-dash GPS and portable GPS and DVD players designed by many larger companies from around the world,” said Darrell Lowrance of Lowrance Electronics. “Although the competition was fierce, this SEMA award is now our second ‘Best New Mobile Electronics Entertainment Product’ win in a row, and confirms the competitive advantages and leading-edge technology we have engineered into our electronics and GPS products. The iWay 350c will begin shipping for the Christmas season, and we believe this product will provide significant continuing growth for our automotive GPS product line.”

Apple confirms USB-C is coming to iPhones, but it’s still bitter about it

Apple is going to embrace the USB-C port for iPhones, ditching the Lightning standard that it has held on tightly for years. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, Greg Joswiak, confirmed that Apple is going to comply with the EU’s decision of mandatorily putting a USB-C port for a wide range of electronic gadgets, including iPhones.

“Obviously, we’ll have to comply,” Joswiak told Joanna Stern when quizzed about the transition away from Lightning to the eventual USB-C destiny for iPhones. “We have no choice as we do around the world to comply to local laws. But we think the approach would have been better environmentally, and better for our customers to not have a government be that prescriptive,” he added.
