This new MediaTek chip is great news for Android phones

MediaTek is adding a new mobile SoC (system on chip) to its portfolio – the Dimensity 9200+ – which is going to appear inside Android phones slated for market release later this month.

A slightly upgraded version of the Dimensity 9200, which has appeared inside high-end Android phones like the Vivo X90, the Dimensity 9200+ appears to be a slightly binned version to serve an added dash of performance grunt.

This one goes squarely against Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processors. The prime core on MediaTek’s latest offering is an Arm Cortex-X3 unit clocked at 3.35 GHz, compared to the 3.05 GHz performance core on the standard Dimensity 9200. Likewise, the triple cluster of Arm Cortex A-715 cores on the Dimensity 9200+ tick at 3.0 GHz, while its predecessor used the same core cluster but peaked at 2.85 GHz.

MediaTek has also given the same treatment to the efficiency cores on the Dimensity 9200+, picking a batch of four Arm Cortex-A510 cores with a peak frequency of 2.0 GHz, a slight boost compared to the quad cluster of the same cores operating at 1.8 GHz on the Dimensity 9200 SoC. The chipmaker is also touting a 17% performance boost for the Arm Immortalis G715 GPU on its new mobile processor.

The rest of the package remains identical from a hardware perspective, but MediaTek claims to have made some software-side optimizations that allow the Dimensity 9200+ to deliver up to 36% higher battery efficiency. The in-house HyperEngine 6.0 tech promises up to 12% gains while playing games, alongside a handful of other tricks like hardware-based ray-tracing for a more accurate depiction of shadows and reflections, reduction in motion blurring, high frame stability, and lower latency when connected to a Bluetooth audio device.

Notably, MediaTek also parades support for Wi-Fi 7 (up to 6.5Gbps data rate) and claims up to 70% higher efficiency while also delivering 46% lower latency on wireless connection compared to rivals. For audiophiles, the chipmaker promises studio-grade wireless music listening experience with 24-bit /192KHz output rate support. The connectivity suite includes Bluetooth v5.3 and mmWave 5G with dual-SIM dual-activity (DSDS) support.

Phones powered by MediaTek’s newest chip can capture 4K videos at up to 60 fps frame rate, which is fairly standard, alongside 8K 30 fps support. The Dimensity 9200+ SoC can also drive screens with up to 240Hz refresh rate and a peak WQHD resolution. Rumors suggest that the Neo 8 Pro by Vivo sub-brand iQoo and a ROG Phone 7 trim by Asus might be the first phones to serve MediaTek’s latest chip.

Unsurprisingly, MediaTek was one of the first chipmakers on board when Wi-Fi 7 made its debut at CES 2022, promising to deliver top speeds more than twice as fast as current Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E technologies. While Wi-Fi 7 is still in its nascent stages — few consumer devices support it, and the spec has yet to receive its final ratification — MediaTek’s second-generation Filogic chips will ensure that smartphones, laptops, and routers are ready to deliver the best of what the new standard has to offer.

MediaTek is ready to enter the flagship Android phone race and challenge Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with its latest processor. The Taiwanese company’s latest weapon is the MediaTek Dimensity 9300, which is based on the 4nm process and packs a cluster of four top-tier ARM cores, putting in a position to race ahead via brute performance.
Compared to its direct rival from Qualcomm (which only has one large prime core), the MediaTek chip goes with an even more ambitious core configuration. There are four ARM Cortex-X4 cores, one of which goes up to 3.25 GHz, while the other three are clocked at 2.85 GHz. For less demanding tasks, there’s a cluster of Arm Cortex-A710 cores.
That large core cluster flexes its might on synthetic benchmarks, with MediaTek claiming nearly double the performance on the Geekbench 6 test and an astounding tally of over 213,000 on the AnTuTu platform. On gaming-centric tests such as GFXBench, the company claims an even bigger lead.
The Dimensity 9300 can support screens maxing out at a 180Hz refresh rate, while 4K panels can refresh at up to the 120Hz mark. On the connectivity front, Wi-Fi 7 is part of the package. There’s also a dedicated security chip in place for securely booting the OS.

On the AI-specific innovation front, MediaTek’s latest flagship mobile processor comes with an AI engine that doubles the AI performance at certain metrics while also consuming 45% less energy. Dubbed APU 790, MediaTek claims it is eight times faster than its predecessor and can produce visual media in less than a second using Stable Diffusion’s text-to-image models.
The company has also tweaked the memory architecture and claims that it can run large language models with up to 13 billion parameters, “with scalability up to 33 billion.” For comparison, Qualcomm’s latest and greatest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 can only run AI models with up to 10 billion parameters.
Just like its Qualcomm counterpart, MediaTek’s offering also supports mainstream multimodal large language models such as Meta’s Llama 2 and Baidu LLM, among others. But the focus is once again clear. MediaTek is following Qualcomm straight into the race for generative AI tasks covering text, visual media, and audio generation. With another chip company doubling down on AI, this could be even worse news for Google's Pixel phones.
On the graphics front, the Dimensity 9300 relies on the new 12-core Immortalis-G720 GPU, which is said to be 46% faster and 40% more frugal at power consumption. MediaTek is also banking on gaming-centric perks like hardware-accelerated ray tracing that are touted to deliver a 60 frames-per-second (fps) gaming experience with console-grade lighting effects.
