Get ready for yet another memory card specification which you will be able to shove into your portable electronics. The MultiMediaCard Association, at the request of Samsung, has finalized the details of the MMCmicro Card.
The MMCmico Card, according to a MMCA press release, represents the third incarnation of the MultiMediaCard form factor, along with the MMCplus and MMCmobile cards. This latest addition to the clan is about one-third the size of the MMCmobile.
Technical specifications of the MMCmicro Card, which is geared towards the latest needs for data storage in mobile phones, include data transfer rates of up to 26MB/second and eventually support for up to 4GB of storage. Sizes of up to 1GB cards from Samsung and other companies, which have been producing them since March, are expected to be available later this year, with the 4GB ones coming by mid-2007.
What does this all translate into in terms of practical use? The MMCA says, for example, a 256MB MMCmicro Card could hold around 250 minutes of CD quality music or over 500 photos on a mobile phone with a two mega-pixel camera.
According to Danny Lin, MMCA Marketing Committee Co-Chair, “MMCmicro Cards is the latest memory card standard from the MMCA. These micro-sized memory cards, will permit handset manufacturers to pack large amounts of removable data storage into ever-smaller handsets. And as more memory-intensive audio and video applications appear on mobile handsets, they will in turn drive demand for even greater storage capabilities.”
