Moto X wooden back: Motorola teaser suggests imminent launch

If you’ve been holding out for the long-rumored wood-back option for the Moto X, it looks like you don’t have too much longer to wait.

A teaser posted Sunday on Motorola’s official Google+ page hinted heavily at an imminent release. Heck, by the time you read this, it might already be showing on the Moto Maker site.

Alongside an image of a cheap-looking piece of plywood with an outline of the Moto X drawn upon it, the Google-owned company included the message, “Put this DIY project on hold. Trust us.”

With a statement like that coming at a time like this, it’s a safe bet the wood option will start selling this side of Christmas, or Motorola surely would’ve waited until January before it started throwing teasers around.

The expected launch certainly fits well with a leak back in the summer from reliable tipster Evleaks, who suggested “wooden back configurations” for Motorola’s US-made handset would be coming in Q4.

Evleaks’ post showed four different wood backs – in teak, ebony, rosewood, and bamboo – which are expected to sell for $50 apiece. Let’s see if they don’t turn up next week, giving Moto X buyers a few extra options when it comes to customizing their new handset.

The Moto X, Motorola’s first handset since Google bought the company in 2012, launched to great fanfare in the summer and on the whole has picked up some fairly decent reviews in the tech press.

Impressed by its huge array of customization options, superb Google Now functionality, and powerful processors, DT gave the device a 4/5 mark in its review.

The Moto X comes with a 4.7-inch 1280 x 720 display, 10-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front, 1.7GHz dual-core processor, and 2GB of RAM. And soon, if you fancy it, a wood back.

High-end Motorola Edge X flagship leaks with 144Hz OLED display
Motorola Edge X render showing the front and back of the smartphone.

Motorola is prepping to launch a high-end device powered by the next-generation flagship Qualcomm chipset. The Motorola Edge X renders and specs have leaked online, which hints at an imminent launch. It is expected to be dubbed as Motorola Edge 30 Ultra in some regions, but will likely launch as the Edge X in the U.S., which tends to follow a different naming convention. As seen on the renders, it could feature a punch-hole camera cutout on its OLED display.

The latest development comes from 91Mobiles, which has collaborated with Steve Hemmerstoffer, aka OnLeaks, to reveal the details about the upcoming Motorola device. The smartphone is tipped to come equipped with a 6.6-inch OLED display that could have a 144Hz refresh rate and support for HDR10+. It will have a power button on the left, and the volume rocker and probably a Google Assistant button on the right edge. The display is claimed to be flat with no curved edges.

Motorola is back with a new entry-level unlocked phone -- the Moto G Pure. Despite not having any particularly unique features to it, the $160 G Pure does excel at being a fantastic budget phone, as it falls in the same price range as the aging Moto E. According to Motorola, the G Pure is the new entry point for its budget lineup, though not technically a direct replacement of the Moto E.

The phone is only available in a Deep Indigo color option, which looks like a light black to our eyes. Sporting a 6.5-inch HD+ Max Vision 1600 x 720 display, the Moto G Pure has a resolution of 269 pixels per inch. It weighs about 188 grams. Its water-repellent design is accented with a subtle fingerprint scanner on the Motorola logo, though it's important to note that it's not waterproof.
