Motorola to hold MWC 2014 event on February 25, but no new products are expected

With all that has been going on at Motorola over the past few weeks, one could forgive any decision to avoid Mobile World Congress. After all, the firm hasn’t had much of a presence there in the past few years, but our hopes were higher than usual following the Moto X and Moto G’s launch. However, Motorola has confirmed it is going to be at MWC 2014, and will be holding a press event too.

Invitations have been sent out for February 25, day two of the event, but sadly it seems there are no major announcements planned. Apparently, CEO Dennis Woodside will be there to provide a few updates on the business, which will presumably center on new owners Lenovo. So far, Lenovo’s CEO has indicated the Motorola brand name will remain in use, but may alter slightly to Motorola by Lenovo on newly announced hardware. Pocket-Lint.com says Motorola has informed them the gathering will be for a business update only.

While we’re keen to hear more about the deal between the two companies, we were also hoping the event would be used to reveal a new device or two. While the Moto X and Moto G aren’t due for replacement any time soon, there has been talk of Motorola wanting to make an even cheaper smartphone, perhaps with a final price tag of $50. Woodside revealed his ambitions in a recent interview, but no further details on such a phone have been revealed since. There has also been speculation about a Motorola smartwatch, which may or may not be the same as the rumored Google project, and the prospect of new Droid-branded hardware was a possibility too.

Just because Motorola probably won’t be launching any new products at MWC, doesn’t mean the meeting won’t be interesting. We’ll bring you all the news on the day.

I record interviews for work. These are my favorite free recorder apps

Before you head to the app store on your phone to buy a voice-recording app, take a moment to consider the apps that may already be installed on your phone. Why? In my experience, they're likely all you really need. I’ve recorded interviews and voice-overs for work for years, and I’ve found the two best examples come preinstalled on your phone already, so they’re entirely free to use.

Google Pixel Tablet on its charging dock.

Tablets are a dime-a-dozen these days, with offerings from all the great brands including Apple, Samsung, Lenovo, and more. So, if you really want to stand out in a sea of similar tech, you need to do things a little differently. That's what Google's Pixel Tablet offers. How? It comes with a unique speaker dock that can be used to both charge the device and offer room-filling sound -- almost like a smart speaker add-on. Better yet, when your Pixel Tablet is docked it benefits from the Hub Mode, turning the device into a smart display, with digital photo frame support, smart home controls, and hands-free Google functionality. Of course, it could set you back at full price, normally $499 unless you find it included in a roundup of the best Google Pixel deals. Well, guess what? Thanks to a Best Buy Google Pixel Tablet deal, you can get it today for $439 and save $60. Hurry, though, it's part of Best Buy's recent 48-hour sale so it won't stick around for long.

Why you should buy the Google Pixel Tablet
Okay, okay, so in our Google Pixel Tablet review, Joe Maring did give it less than stellar remarks, but he called out its reliable fingerprint sensor, comfortability during use and excellent speaker dock. Honestly, how many tablets come with a matching speaker dock that transforms the entire experience? This tablet also marks a "lot of firsts" for Google, as it's the first tablet from the company in nearly five years, the first Android tablet in eight years, and can be converted into a smart home display with the speaker dock. All of which are notable milestones.
