When Motorola first announced its Moto Z line and accompanying Moto Mods in 2016, it sounded like a pretty risky bet for consumers. Who would want to spend money on a line of magnetic accessories that are tethered to one device?

Well, as the Moto Z line comes up on its two-year anniversary, it appears those concerns were largely unfounded. This week, the company announced its newest collection of Moto Mod Style Shells. The Style Shells are just the latest addition to Motorola’s growing collection of Moto Mods, and are aimed at allowing you to customize your phone without adding the extra bulk of a case.

The new Moto Mods Style Shells are constructed entirely of Gorilla Glass and come in five different festive and quirky designs. Joining Motorola’s current lineup of nylon Style Shells, the new collection offers a more fashion-forward selection. Of course, the interesting designs come at a price — you’ll have to shell out $30 to get one for yourself, which is up from the $20 price tag on the nylon shells.

According to Motorola, making the mods out of Gorilla Glass essentially causes them to be “damage resistant,” but in the end, even though Gorilla Glass is pretty tough, its still glass. If you end up with one of these mods, we would recommend still being careful to avoid any drops.

The new lineup shows that Moto Mods can be pretty versatile. While some people prefer to use functional Mods, they’re also a great opportunity to customize the look of your device. When it comes to functional Mods, we’ve seen quite a few — including a projector, Hasselblad camera mod, and more. At CES, the company unveiled even more Mods, like the Vital Mod, which allows users to track five vital signs in a matter of only a few minutes. Sure, it’s probably not something that everyone needs — but it could be very helpful to those that want to keep a close eye on their health.

The midrange phone market is sparse in the U.S., with most phones costing closer to $1,000 or lower than $400 and very few well-known brands in between aside from the newly-launched Google Pixel 5a and the Samsung Galaxy A52. The Motorola Edge now joins this crowd, hitting the U.S. market at a $700 price point, though it’ll start at $200 off at launch.

It’s also worth pointing out that the Motorola Edge isn’t exactly a copycat of the Moto Edge 20 that’s being released in international markets alongside the Edge 20 Lite and Edge 20 Pro. While both models have lots of similarities, the two big differences from overseas markets are that the U.S. model has a 6.8-inch screen and a larger 5,000mAh battery. The logic behind this differentiation isn’t entirely clear, but it does give U.S. customers an edge in battery runtime compared to international buyers.

The Edge 20 Lite will likely be the cheapest of the new Edge 20 series and is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 720 5G chip with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It sports a 6.7-inch full HD+ display, the same as the other phones in the series. It’s reported to have three rear cameras: A 108MP main, a 16MP ultrawide, and an 8MP lens, with a 32MP selfie camera on the front. The battery here is expected to be the biggest of the range at 5,000mAh and it will feature 30-watt fast charging.

Weeks after announcing the Motorola Edge 20 series for international markets, Motorola has unveiled a new phone from the lineup for the U.S. market: The new Motorola Edge. The Moto Edge is an upper midrange, verging on flagship phone from Motorola, a brand typically known for budget devices, though it has had some noteworthy flagships. Reviewers liked the previous generation of the phone, but saw room for improvement in camera performance and software -- and Motorola seems to have delivered.

According to Motorola, the new Edge has better image quality than its predecessor. The triple camera system includes a 108-megapixel (MP) main camera, an 8MP wide-angle (119-degree) lens with Macro Vision, and a 2MP depth sensor. The setup is ideal for fitting more scenes into the frame, zooming in for extreme close-ups of subjects like food and flowers, and blurring the background for more professional-looking portraits.
