Motorola Sheds Another 4,000 Jobs

Motorola Sheds Another 4,000 Jobs

Things are bad at the Mobile Devices division at Motorola. It’s lost over $2.7 billion since the beginning of 2007 as it’s lost ground to competitors. Last year the company announced 3,000 layoffs, and now it’s adding to the misery by shedding another 4,000 staff.

According to Information Week, Motorola hasn’t issued a successful handset since the Razr, which sold 110 units, and now it lies in fourth place among manufacturers. At one point the Mobile Devices division was going to become a separate business, but that’s been put on hold as the company focuses on a Google Android phone due in the second half of this year.

In a statement, co-CEO Sanjay Jha said:

"The actions we are taking today in our Mobile Devices business will allow us to further reduce our cost structure and positions us for improved financial performance in 2009. Together with these actions and the announcements made in the fourth quarter, the Mobile Devices business expects to recognize annual cost savings of approximately $1.2 billion in 2009."

Nokia 5.4 vs. Motorola Moto G Power

Budget smartphones have really come into their own over the past few years, with manufacturers honing the art of offering great features at affordable prices. The Nokia 5.4 is the latest in a long line of such devices, boasting such selling points as a quad-lens rear camera, 4,000mAh battery, a 6.39-inch display, as well as a modest $249 price tag. However, while it looks good enough at first glance, it certainly has plenty of competition to fend off, with the Moto G Power (2021) being arguably the best sub-$200 smartphones you can buy today.

With an even bigger 5,000mAh battery and a pretty 6.6-inch display, the Moto G Power has plenty to worry the Nokia 5.4 and its fans. But how exactly does each phone weigh up against the other? We answer this question with a head-to-head comparison. This should help you decide which is the best budget Android phone for you.

Motorola One 5G Ace vs. Google Pixel 4a 5G
Motorola One 5G Ace vs Google Pixel 4a 5G

Motorola's 2021 Moto G lineup isn't going to set the world on fire, but it does include some excellent phones regardless. The Motorola One 5G Ace is a streamlined version of last year's Motorola One 5G that cuts $150 off the price of the 2020 phone. Despite that, the One 5G Ace keeps the 6.7-inch screen, an equally large battery, the same 48-megapixel main rear camera lens, and the 5G connection. On the other hand, it also cuts back a few perks, adding a slightly weaker processor and doing away with its predecessor's 90Hz refresh rate.

Even without those extras, it's still a solid phone. But it has plenty of stiff competition in the best cheap 5G phones, with the Google Pixel 4a 5G being its most notable rival. We compare these two phones to find out which is the best overall, which should help you pick which is the mid-priced Android phone for you.

motorola razr hands on features price photos video release date review 18

The jury is still out on whether folding phones are truly the future, but Motorola's revamped Razr has certainly thrown more fuel on the fire. Bathed in the warm glow of nostalgia, this stylish design harks back to past glories, and points forward to a new possible direction for smartphone design. I think the Motorola Razr is the most exciting unveil from Motorola in years. It's a stunning device with some seriously tempting highlights, but there are disappointments here too. In fact, it's a strangely mixed bag.

Here's what I like about and don't like about Motorola's new phone.
