Firefox OS tablets may already be in the works

Firefox-OS-tablet

Firefox OS is going to be on phones, but tablets may be right around the corner. Engadget heard from its Chinese branch today about the first Firefox OS tablet. The source was a private event at the Computex conference being put on by Mozilla and Foxconn, which was recently named as the 19th manufacturer to join Mozilla’s Firefox OS family.

While Foxconn is already known to be working at at least five different Firefox OS smartphones, it’s still not 100 percent clear if the newly unveiled tablet is among them, or indeed, what makes it unique.

Dr. Li Gong, SVP of Mobile Devices, President of Asia Operations, and CEO of Mozilla Taiwan, said in the official press release, “We are very excited about the cooperation with Foxconn and we are glad to see more partners supporting the Firefox OS and the open Web … At Mozilla we see the open Web as the biggest and the best platform for the mobile world. The Firefox OS initiative helps solidify open Web standards for mobile computing; it also encourages and enables more openness in system integration and device interoperation.”

Whether or not the Firefox OS initiative really will help solidify open Web standards remains to be seen, though aside from a few hiccups here and there, the Firefox browser has repeatedly proven itself to be a favorite among Internet users. That bodes well, but the hard part will be convincing long-term iOS, Android, and other operating system loyalists to take the gamble on a new OS. Windows Phone users are still missing some the bigger apps and thousands of popular games offered by iOS and Google Play, so if the Firefox OS and tablet are going to succeed, they’ll probably have to offer a wealth of innovative features, and at the very least, gain an immense amount of third-party support in the initial phases.

Which iPad tablets are compatible with iPadOS 16?
An iPad using Stage Manager in iPadOS 16.

Apple's iPadOS 16 has finally arrived after the company delayed it for a few weeks to ensure it was truly ready for prime time. As a result, it skipped over version 16.0 and went straight to iPadOS 16.1 to match the corresponding iOS 16.1 release that came out at the same time for iPhone users. Nevertheless, it packs in most of the new collaboration and multitasking capabilities that Apple showed off at its June Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). However, we'll have to wait for iPadOS 16.2 before we see Apple's new Freeform collaboration app.

As implied by the identical version numbers, iPadOS 16.1 brings many of the best iOS 16.1 features from the iPhone over to Apple's tablet, including shared photo libraries for families, powerful live text and visual look-up features, and enhanced messaging and sharing capabilities. However, iPadOS 16 also gets its own unique set of productivity tools to edge Apple's tablet closer to a more laptop-like experience.

The Google Pixel Tablet is a bad idea that might just work
Someone holding a Google Pixel Tablet.

Google is bringing a strange new addition to its Pixel line of products next year: an Android tablet. Though the company has been building up to a Pixel Watch for years with back-to-back acquisitions, the Pixel Tablet seemingly came out of nowhere when it was initially teased at Google I/O in May. And during Google's hardware event for the Pixel 7, we got an even better glimpse at it.

Although the Android tablet niche is one that's struggled for a while, Google is taking an interesting approach with the Pixel Tablet. In addition to functioning as a "normal" tablet, Google is also positioning the Pixel Tablet as a dashboard for its ecosystem of smart home appliances. Google’s recent history with large-screen devices is nothing short of a mess, leading me to believe the Pixel Tablet is destined for failure. But it's also a bad idea that just might work.
