Nokia said it was stepping back and working on navigation and network infrastructure after Microsoft acquired its mobile division in 2013, but the Finnish company surprised us when it unveiled the Nokia N1, an Android-powered tablet.
We haven’t heard much from the company since, but now it looks like Nokia is preparing to get back in the mobile market — one it dominated for more than 14 years. Android Authority has received an tip from an insider that the company is readying the launch of the Nokia A1, its first Android smartphone, for the summer of 2016.
The renders, also from the same source, show a rather plain-looking phone with capacitive buttons that come straight from Android’s early days. The back of the device seems to be some sort of brushed design, likely on a plastic back. The speaker is also situated on the back, along with a circular camera in the center top and a flash below it. The power button is on the right side of the phone, with the volume controls on the left.
Keep in mind that we can’t verify this leak, so take all of this information with a grain of salt.
The screen itself shows Nokia’s Z Launcher, over what’s likely Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
After taking a hiatus, Nokia’s A1 is sure to draw some buzz — but it’s clear that if true, the Finnish company is playing it safe with its first foray into Android smartphones. Besides, with so many competitors in an oversaturated market, it will take time for Nokia to find a way to distinguish itself from the top dogs.
We’ll keep you updated as we learn more about the Nokia A1.
