The OnePlus Pad is the very unoriginal name for the company’s first tablet

For a really long time, Apple and Samsung have pretty much dominated the tablet space with a combined market share of more than 50%. Now, Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus seems to be keen on entering the space as well. A recent report by Indian tipster Mukul Sharma and 91 Mobiles indicates that OnePlus could launch its first-ever tablet next year. Unsurprisingly, OnePlus is likely to give this device a very unoriginal name: The OnePlus Pad.

According to Mukul, the OnePlus Pad is likely to be launched first in China, followed by India by the second half of 2022. However, this also means that we should not expect OnePlus to launch the OnePlus Pad along with the company’s OnePlus 10 lineup, which is expected in the first quarter of 2022.  There is also no word on if the OnePlus Pad refers to just a single device or if we’d see an entire lineup of OnePlus Pad tablets being simultaneously launched.

Interestingly, this development comes nearly five months after a certification document granted by the European Union Intellectual Property Office revealed that OnePlus owns the rights for the name “OnePlus Pad.” This could also be an indication that OnePlus has global plans for the OnePlus Pad and that we will see these tablets make it to Europe and, possibly, North America.

Even if the OnePlus Pad does make it to Europe and the U.S., there is no denying that it will be an uphill task for the company to have any sizable impact on the market, at least in the first few years of its existence. This becomes painfully evident when you realize that the third biggest tablet maker in the world — Lenovo — has been around for a really long time and still only has about 9% of the market.

In comparison, Apple is pretty much the behemoth here with a massive 32% of the global tablet market captured by its comprehensive lineup of iPads. Samsung gets by with a decent 20% of the market. The only other sizable player in this segment are Lenovo and Amazon — with the latter garnering 6.8% of the tablet space in 2021.

The Pixel Tablet could be the iPad killer I’ve waited years for
A render of the front of the Google Pixel Tablet.

You can build all the great hardware your heart desires, but if the software isn’t optimized for the hardware, the product will fail. This has been the story of almost every Android tablet since the inception of the segment. Samsung has built its DeX mode to make its Galaxy Tab tablets more productive, and it works to some extent, but it’s not available across the lineup.

OnePlus Pad is the latest entrant in the Android tablet space, and the launch yet again emphasized the glaring issues of app optimization problems for big Android screens. This is why Google’s upcoming Pixel Tablet could be the make-or-break point for the Android tablet category. And that makes me more excited about the Pixel Tablet launch at Google I/O 2023 than anything else.

The OnePlus Pad looks incredible — except for one peculiar thing
OnePlus Pad held in hand.

For years, there has been talk about OnePlus releasing a tablet. That day has finally come, and OnePlus now has the OnePlus Pad, which is officially launching on May 8. I’ve been using one for the past few weeks, and for the most part, the tablet looks great — though the software is a bit lacking.

However, I have some qualms about OnePlus’ decision to place a single, large camera sensor right smack dab in the top middle of a tablet that is designed for horizontal use. How did this not bother whoever came up with it? Maybe I’m using my tablets wrong, but I doubt it.

You can now preorder the OnePlus Pad for $99 … kind of
The back of the OnePlus Pad tablet.

Fans who are excited to finally be getting their hands on the OnePlus Pad are now able to preorder the tablet ... sort of.

Preorders for the OnePlus Pad went live today. However, it's not a preorder in the traditional sense where someone would pay full price for an item upfront and then receive it when it launches for no extra charge. Instead, fans are able to put down a $99 down payment to reserve their spot in "line" for the tablet when it releases later this year.
