On the look out for a new phone, and want to make your budget stretch as far as it can possibly go? OnePlus has always been a good bet in that situation, but it’s now worth your consideration even more, having dropped the price of the OnePlus 2 and OnePlus X. Why has it taken out the price-cutting scissors? There’s a little rumor the OnePlus 3 may be right around the corner.

Don’t let this put you off though, as the new phone will be full price when it eventually arrives, and these end-of-line models represent strong purchases for anyone wanting a combination of style, performance, and specs. Your wallet will need to contain $300 for the 64GB OnePlus 2, which is $50 less than before, and the OnePlus X is also down $50 to just $200.

In the U.K., the prices have also been reduced. The OnePlus X is yours for £190, but we’d say spend a little more and pick up the limited edition Ceramic model for £210. The rear panel has a different look to the Onyx glass model, and the material is notoriously difficult to work with, making this a special smartphone. The OnePlus 2 with 64GB of memory is £250.

Which of the two should you buy? The OnePlus 2 is the more technically capable of the pair, with a Snapdragon 810 processor, 4GB of RAM on the 64GB model, a fingerprint sensor that’s incredibly speedy, and a decent 13-megapixel camera with optical image stabilisation and laser autofocus on the back. The OnePlus X is more mid-range with a Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, and a 13-megapixel rear camera; but it looks beautiful, and feels great in the hand. However, U.S. buyers should be aware that the phone isn’t compatible with all 4G bands, so connectivity at the fastest speeds may not be possible.

It’s not a secret the OnePlus 3 is coming very soon, and the reduction in price of these older models will help make way for the new smartphone. For anyone not that bothered about owning the latest-and-greatest, it’s an ideal opportunity to pick up a great phone at a good price.

The OnePlus Nord 4 does one thing better than any other Android phone
OnePlus Nord 4 Midnight black with metal back held in hand.

Other than a few deviations, OnePlus has a penchant for value products. The premium OnePlus 12 offers a (mostly) superior set of features and a refined experience over similarly-priced flagships such as the Galaxy S24 Plus or the Pixel 8 Pro. Similarly, the $500 OnePlus 12R offers exceptional performance and a flagship-like experience for its price. The OnePlus Nord 4, which sits in a price bracket right under the 12R, has its own benefits, but one that stands out is its metal back.

The OnePlus Nord 4 is the first and currently the only 5G phone to feature a metal back panel. Not only is it a striking design but it also has another trait that perceivably makes it more exciting than other phones: Its metal body potentially helps improve performance.

This is the OnePlus Open’s new red color, and it’s absolutely stunning
OnePlus Open Apex Edition Crimson Shadow red resting on a gray table.

"Wow, it really pops out," is what rang up in my head as I approached my desk where the new OnePlus Open's Apex Edition lay. Admittedly, this wasn't my first impression of the phone, and I only arrived a few hours after having fiddled with it, trying to inspect it for differences from the black variant I have been using since the launch last year. But given the spontaneity of the sensation, I took it as authentic. Perhaps that's what OnePlus aims with this phone: to make heads turn and eyes fixated.

The OnePlus Open is one of the finest foldables to buy in the U.S., other than the Samsung Galaxy Fold. It has better ergonomics than other sideways-opening foldables, and it is backed by superior Hasselblad cameras and faster wired charging. Most importantly, the OnePlus Open can be told apart by its design, which is primarily made of faux leather and a large, round camera module.

A heavy metal band has made a song about a OnePlus phone
A promo photo showing heavy metal band Lordi taking a selfie with the OnePlus Nord 4.

OnePlus, never one to shy away from a crazy promo opportunity, has teamed up with Finnish heavy metal monsters Lordi for its latest collaboration. However, it’s not a smartphone, a smartwatch, or a concert. It’s a song inspired by the recently launched OnePlus Nord 4, which, as you may already know, is Made of Metal.

Why the capitalization? That’s because Made of Metal is also the name of Lordi’s song, complete with the chorus, “Never Settle, Made of Metal.” Yes, that’s more deliberate capitalization, as Never Settle is OnePlus’ tagline, which also conveniently rhymes with “metal,” making the lyricist's job nice and easy when told it had to be included somewhere in the song.
