Get ready for a future with a bend in it — 2019 looks set to be the year of the folding smartphone. Multiple manufacturers are tipped to be releasing folding smartphones in one form or another, including Samsung, Huawei, and LG. You can another name to that list, because it seems Chinese phone manufacturer Oppo will be releasing a folding smartphone, too — and it will be coming to MWC 2019.

According to Dutch tech site LetsGoDigital, the news was confirmed by the product manager of Oppo, Chuck Wang, in a gathering of Dutch journalists at Oppo’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China. While he was unable to share any details about the phone itself, he was able to confirm that the phone would be showcased at Mobile World Conference 2019, which takes place in Barcelona, Spain at the end of February.

No specs have currently been shared, but it would be safe to assume that a new folding smartphone would be the jewel in any phone manufacturer’s crown. Therefore, we expect to find flagship specs on such a phone. Despite knowing that the phone will fold, there’s also remarkably little else we know about the potential design. Apple has applied for multiple patents for the shape of a foldable iPhone, showing the versatility of such technology. Oppo has also looked at a variety of designs for such a device, leaving us unsure what the eventual look of an Oppo folding smartphone will be.

Oppo isn’t a name that’s particularly well known in the West, but it’s a huge phone manufacturer in other territories. Oppo regularly comes in fifth place as the world’s largest phone manufacturer — making a bigger player than HTC, LG, or Sony. Oppo made waves in 2018 with the Oppo Find X — a revolutionary smartphone that cut out all bezels, and that used a mechanical slide to hide the phone’s camera from view. Oppo’s interest in the cutting edge of mobile technology is clear, and it’s not afraid to put its money where its mouth is. According to that same meeting, Oppo is increasing research & development funding to 10 billion Chinese yuan — roughly $1.4 billion dollars.

What’s the upshot of a potential Oppo folding smartphone? Price. With Samsung’s foldable phone rumored to cost up to an eye-watering $2,500, an Oppo phone could provide a much cheaper alternative for anyone looking to get some folding action.

Oppo’s Find N is great, but I still like the Galaxy Z Fold 3
Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Oppo Find N open from the back.

Samsung largely pioneered the foldable smartphone segment with the launch of the first Galaxy Fold device in 2019. While it wasn't the best in terms of usability, it was certainly one of a kind, and with the latest Galaxy Z Fold 3, subsequent refinements have almost perfected the device. Fast-forward to 2022, and we have clamshell foldables and smartphone-tablet hybrids, as well as up to 17-inch laptops displays that can bend in half and were showcased during CES 2022.

However, that concept of having a tablet in your pocket folded into a smartphone size has much or less remained the same. That is, until the Oppo Find N debuted earlier this year, and we got our hands on it. I have used the Oppo foldable for about a week alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 3, mostly for web and media consumption.

The Honor Magic V folding smartphone is here to tempt you
Honor Magic V open.

Honor has launched the Magic V folding smartphone at an event in China. It’s the first folding smartphone from the company and joins existing foldable devices in the market including the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Oppo Find N.

When closed it has a 6.45-inch screen with a 21:9 aspect ratio, a 2560 x 1080 resolution, and a 120Hz refresh rate. The body measures 72mm wide and 160mm long, with small bezels around the outer screen for a 90% screen-to-body ratio. Honor says special glass has made the outer screen very durable and demonstrated that by dropping the phone from shoulder height with no damage.

Folding laptops at CES 2022 should have learned from mobile’s mistakes
Aasus Zenbook 17 Fold folded in half.

Screens that fold up are already a hot topic in the smartphone world, but at CES 2022 they featured far more heavily on laptops than ever, showing the burgeoning tech is moving beyond small handheld devices. However, while the laptops all look really cool, familiar problems haunt them, making me concerned that the trend is a case of companies misguidedly trying to pique our interest in a new way while the innovation still struggles to find its feet on mobile.
Folding laptops
The Asus Zenbook 17 Fold captured the most attention because, according to our Senior Staff Writer Jacob Roach, who tried the machine out at CES 2022, “it’s one of the first real, working foldable laptops.” There have been others, but they’ve all been early prototypes or concepts. The Zenbook 17 Fold’s big selling point is one that echoes that of folding smartphones: Open it, and you’re greeted by a big screen (17 inches in this instance), in a case the same size as a non-folding 13-inch laptop.

Asus’ laptop with a folding screen was joined by the Samsung Flex Note, another model with a 17-inch screen folded inside a 13-inch laptop-sized case. Samsung is a relatively old hand when it comes to folding smartphones, having pioneered the folding mobile trend along with Huawei in 2019. Intel also showed foldable laptop displays at the show, claiming manufacturers would use the platform on laptops we can buy in 2022.
