The Oppo R1C has a high-class sapphire glass screen, but without the luxury price tag

oppo r1c news front
Oppo has announced the R1C smartphone, which features a sapphire glass panel over the top of its screen. Around the back, Oppo has paid special attention to the design, and according to local reports, it catches the light in a very unusual way. It certainly looks different in the images.

Oppo R1C WhiteSapphire glass is very strong and scratch resistant. We’ve seen it used on luxury smartphones from Vertu for sometime, and heard many rumors Apple would adopt the same thing for a future iPhone. Oppo’s not the only mainstream manufacturer using sapphire though, just a few months ago Huawei released a special sapphire edition of the Ascend P7.

Back to the R1C. Aside from the sapphire glass, the big news is the inclusion of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 615 processor. That’s an octa-core, 64-bit chip running at 1.5GHz, and has 2GB of RAM keeping it company. The screen measures 5-inches, but slightly disappoints with a 720p resolution. Just 16GB of internal storage space is available, but the MicroSD card slot can boost this by 128GB.

Oppo R1C ColorsAndroid 4.4.1 is installed with Oppo’s Color OS 2.0.1 user interface over the top, which resembles Huawei’s efforts to tweak the Google operating system by doing away with the app drawer. A 2420mAh battery powers the 6.85mm thick phone, and it has 4G connectivity with support for two SIM cards. Finally, a Sony 13-megapixel camera is fitted to the back, and a 5-megapixel lens is found above the screen.

So far, the Oppo R1C has only been confirmed for launch in China, where it will cost the equivalent of about $450, and will go on sale January 20.

I record interviews for work. These are my favorite free recorder apps

Before you head to the app store on your phone to buy a voice-recording app, take a moment to consider the apps that may already be installed on your phone. Why? In my experience, they're likely all you really need. I’ve recorded interviews and voice-overs for work for years, and I’ve found the two best examples come preinstalled on your phone already, so they’re entirely free to use.

Google Pixel Tablet on its charging dock.

Tablets are a dime-a-dozen these days, with offerings from all the great brands including Apple, Samsung, Lenovo, and more. So, if you really want to stand out in a sea of similar tech, you need to do things a little differently. That's what Google's Pixel Tablet offers. How? It comes with a unique speaker dock that can be used to both charge the device and offer room-filling sound -- almost like a smart speaker add-on. Better yet, when your Pixel Tablet is docked it benefits from the Hub Mode, turning the device into a smart display, with digital photo frame support, smart home controls, and hands-free Google functionality. Of course, it could set you back at full price, normally $499 unless you find it included in a roundup of the best Google Pixel deals. Well, guess what? Thanks to a Best Buy Google Pixel Tablet deal, you can get it today for $439 and save $60. Hurry, though, it's part of Best Buy's recent 48-hour sale so it won't stick around for long.

Why you should buy the Google Pixel Tablet
Okay, okay, so in our Google Pixel Tablet review, Joe Maring did give it less than stellar remarks, but he called out its reliable fingerprint sensor, comfortability during use and excellent speaker dock. Honestly, how many tablets come with a matching speaker dock that transforms the entire experience? This tablet also marks a "lot of firsts" for Google, as it's the first tablet from the company in nearly five years, the first Android tablet in eight years, and can be converted into a smart home display with the speaker dock. All of which are notable milestones.
