The OnePlus 2 takes on the LG G4 with new manual camera mode

OnePlus has announced the release of OxygenOS 2.1.0, an update to its mobile operating system seen on the OnePlus 2, which adds a brand new manual camera mode to the software. According to an official blog post on the subject, the software is being sent out to a select few owners at the moment, with a wider launch expected to start from September 22.

The addition of a manual camera mode puts the OnePlus 2 — on which OxygenOS is installed as standard — in a small group of smartphones that provide this unusual feature, most notably placing it alongside the LG G4. We’ve seen some impressive results from the G4 using the manual mode, and it could be exactly what’s needed to make the OnePlus 2’s camera shine.

However, OnePlus hasn’t shared any details about what you’ll be able to tweak using the camera mode, or by how much. OnePlus already gave the camera a good start, with a laser autofocus, dual-LED flash, and 13 megapixels to play with, but the software wasn’t particularly strong. The company doesn’t say it has overhauled the camera app, but does state it’s a ‘sizable update full of bug fixes and improvements,’ so we’re quietly hopeful. The update also adds RAW file support for selected third-party camera apps.

The changes aren’t all to do with the camera. Version 2.1.0 also brings Exchange support to OxygenOS, plus a new color balance slider can adjust the color tone of the display, so you can tailor it to your preference. OnePlus has also tweaked the software to remove incompatibility problems with a few apps, and sped up the time it takes to reconnect to the network after turning off airplane mode.

OxygenOS 2.1.0 is only for the OnePlus 2 smartphone, and for now, there’s no information on whether OxygenOS for the OnePlus One will receive a similar update.

OnePlus will deliver four major OxygenOS updates and five years of security updates to some new devices it launches in 2023. Confirmed at a OnePlus community event in London, the company said the decision was partly driven by recognizing more people are keeping their phones for longer.

Gary Chen, head of software products at OnePlus, said, “We do everything we can to enhance user experience. With more users keeping their devices for longer, we want to make sure we can offer that possibility. This new update policy will give users access to the latest security and functional features required to power OnePlus’ signature fast-and-smooth experience throughout the lifetime of the phone.”

OnePlus 10T vs. Nothing Phone 1 camera battle shouldn’t be so close

The OnePlus 10T is the first new phone to come from OnePlus since former co-founder Carl Pei launched his company’s first phone, the Nothing Phone 1. The OnePlus 10T is more expensive than the Nothing Phone 1, yet isn’t as stylish and doesn’t share the same materials, but there are some similarities in the cameras. Putting Pei’s former company’s new phone against his own seemed like an opportunity too good to miss, so which has the better camera?

The OnePlus 10T has a 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 main camera, with optical image stabilization (OIS), plus an 8MP wide-angle camera and a basic 2MP macro camera. The Nothing Phone 1 also has a 50MP Sony IMX766 main camera with OIS, but it's joined by a 50MP wide-angle camera and entirely foregoes a third camera. On the front of both is a 16MP selfie camera.

What makes this test interesting is seeing the differences not only in the way both companies tune the same main camera, but also in how the different processors assist with image reproduction. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 in the OnePlus 10T is the top chip available from maker Qualcomm, while the Nothing Phone 1 has a mid-range Snapdragon 778G processor.

OnePlus’s newest accessory brings 80W charging to your car for $39

In addition to today's full reveal of the OnePlus 10T, OnePlus has announced its new SuperVOOC 80W car charger. This is a huge step for mobile charging on the go. We've seen just how fast 80W can fully juice a device when plugged into a wall outlet, so being able to take those sorts of charging speeds with you on things like road trips or quick errands will be a major convenience. The unfortunate thing about the new OnePlus SuperVOOC car charger, however, is that it won't support all devices.

The charger features two USB ports: one USB-A that supports 80W charging speeds and one USB-C that supports 30W speeds with Power Delivery (PD) standard. If you're looking to make use of the 80W charging speeds from the USB-A port, you'll need to be using a OnePlus phone like the 10T or 10 Pro. Otherwise, you'll need to stick to the 30W charging of the USB-C port. Admittedly, 30W charging is still pretty solid, especially for a car charger, but the fact that only OnePlus devices support 80W charging is a bit disappointing.
