Paying your bills is as easy as taking a photo with Plastiq

It can be a little hard to keep track of bills these days — between electric, gas, rent, loans, and others, there’s always something to pay off. A new app, however, hopes to simplify paying your bills, and all with the simple click of a camera shutter.

The app is called Plastiq, and the goal is essentially to offer something more convenient than a bank’s online bill pay feature. While the app is definitely easier than paying through your bank, what really makes Plastiq stand out is that it allows you to pay with your credit card, ensuring that you can much more easily manage your money, while gaining any rewards available on your card.

According to Plastiq, the target audience for the app is those who enjoy the convenience of having everything paid on a single card, making money more manageable and eliminating any surprise bills from being drawn out of your account.

The app currently only works in the U.S. and Canada, and to use it you don’t need to have signed up for a Plastiq account — you can sign up for one straight from your phone. Once your account has been created, simply take a photo of your bill and the app will analyze the bill to determine how much is owed, when it’s due, and other relevant factors, including your account number for the bill in question. After that, you can choose to either pay the bill or “save for later.”

Saving for later makes things pretty easy — you can opt to pay the bill whenever is best for you, as long as it’s before the due date. If you want, you can even opt to have all your bills paid on the same day. Call it bill day!

If you use Plastiq, you can pay for recurring payments as well as a for variety of services. Not only that, but the app accepts MasterCard, Visa, and American Express, so whatever credit card you have, you should be able to use it with Plastiq (unless it’s a Discover card or something else that’s a little less well known).

Of course Plastiq has to make money too. In exchange for the service’s convenience, you’ll have to pay a 2.5 percent convenience fee for credit cards and a 1 percent convenience fee for debit cards.

You can download Plastiq for yourself on iOS here.

You can fix your own iPhone screen, but you may not want to
Person fixing an open iPhone with tool on a blue table.

Apple surprised us last year when it announced a new self-service repair program to allow iPhone owners to replace their own broken screens, aging batteries, and other key components.

That program finally launched last month, although, at this point, it’s limited to the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 families. Nevertheless, if you’re thinking that this may finally let you fix your own screen, you might want to take a closer look at the various other service options available. Apple’s new Self Service Repair program isn’t for the faint of either heart or wallet.
How much does Apple charge to replace a screen?
Unless you have AppleCare+ (more on that later), you’ll need to shell out between $229 and $329 to have your iPhone 12 or iPhone 13 screen professionally replaced at an Apple Store. The exact amount depends on whether you own an iPhone 12 Mini or an iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Apple takes on Square with Tap to Pay for iPhones

Apple today announced plans to turn hundreds of millions of iPhones into portable card readers with its new Tap to Pay initiative. This is a feature rolling out later this year in the U.S, enabling iPhones to accept payments over Apple Pay and other contactless payment methods with the same ease of use as one would a regular terminal. The company is opening this up with Stripe and Shopify integration this spring.

“As more and more consumers are tapping to pay with digital wallets and credit cards, Tap to Pay on iPhone will provide businesses with a secure, private, and easy way to accept contactless payments and unlock new checkout experiences using the power, security, and convenience of iPhone,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet in a release today. “In collaboration with payment platforms, app developers, and payment networks, we’re making it easier than ever for businesses of all sizes -- from solopreneurs to large retailers -- to seamlessly accept contactless payments and continue to grow their business.”

How taking your blood pressure is about to be as easy as taking your heart rate
Valencell Blood Pressure monitoring.

“We think blood pressure monitoring will change more in the next five years than it has in the last one hundred years,” Ryan Kraudel, Vice President of Marketing at biometric sensor maker Valencell, said as we talked about the company’s innovation in blood pressure monitoring over Zoom for CES 2022.

Such a bold statement could often be glossed over as hyperbole, but the thing is, after hearing what Valencell is working on, his prediction doesn’t sound farfetched at all. Its cuff-less, calibration-free blood pressure monitor could make taking your blood pressure as simple as measuring your heart rate is with a smartwatch today.
What is Valencell working on?
When you want to measure blood pressure, you use either one of those familiar cuffs or a slightly higher-tech cuff-less product to do so. Both are clearly medical devices, though, they are rarely particularly portable and certainly not friendly to use in that they’re noisy and somewhat intrusive. The cuff-less versions are better, but still regularly need to be paired with a cuffed version to make sure they remain accurate. Valencell’s innovative new technology is very different.
