At just $500, the high-performance Poco F2 Pro hits OnePlus and Samsung hard

POCO Global Launch Event

Poco has announced the Poco F2 Pro smartphone, and it looks like one of the better value releases of 2020. Wait, who? Poco made a splash with the original Poco F1 in 2018, and it grabbed headlines and hearts with its excellent blend of performance and low cost. The Poco F1 sold well, with 1.64 million shifted by the fledgling company, and it has high hopes for the sequel.

Poco is pushing the performance of the new phone as a reason to buy, just like it did with the Poco F1. The Poco F2 Pro has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset, the same as you’ll find in many other top smartphones this year, including the OnePlus 8 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus.

Of course, this means the F2 Pro also has 5G connectivity. To provide consistent performance Poco has added liquid cooling, much like it did with the first model. The system has 10 heat sensors to identify the hot spots, and then multiple layers of graphite, graphene, and a big vapor chamber to keep it cool.

For the design, it’s reminiscent of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro and the OnePlus 7T. Made from metal and Gorilla Glass 5, there is a circular camera module on the back, set at the top center of the body. This module contains a 64-megapixel main camera — the Sony IMX686 sensor — along with a 13-megapixel wide-angle sensor, a 5-megapixel macro, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor too. A pop-up 20-megapixel selfie camera completes the list.

On the front is a 6.67-inch AMOLED screen without a notch or hole-punch, delivering a 92% screen-to-body ratio, HDR10+ support, and an in-display fingerprint sensor. It runs Android 10 with the Poco Launcher 2.0 over the top. Poco Launcher 2.0 is even available as a download for all Android phones through Google Play.

What else? There’s a massive 4,700mAh battery inside, which Poco says will last for two days before it’s flat, and is recharged using a 30W fast charge system. It’ll take just 63 minutes to reach 100%, according to the company. It even has a 3.5mm headphone jack and an IR blaster, plus it comes in blue, purple, white, and gray. If some of this sounds a little familiar, it’s because many of these features can be found on Xiaomi’s phones, including the Mi 10 series. This makes sense as Poco is a Xiaomi sub-brand, and the two share technology.

The big deal is the price, because the Poco F2 Pro is great value compared to the competition. It starts at $500, or 500 euros for the standard 6GB/128GB version, or $600/600 euros for the 8GB/256GB model. It’s going to be an import at first, with Gearbest being one of the partners, but availability through Amazon will arrive in the future, although it’s not clear if that includes the U.S. Either way, the new Poco F2 Pro looks like it’ll take up the role once played by OnePlus, by being a specs-focused brand that doesn’t go overboard on price.

The best OnePlus phone deal on Prime Day isn’t the 10 Pro
The OnePlus 10 Pro and OnePlus 9 Pro's camera modules.

The OnePlus 10 Pro is on offer as part of Amazon’s Prime Day 2022, but we’re not going to suggest you buy it, because if you dig around a little more, there’s a better offer on a different OnePlus phone. The OnePlus 9 Pro may be a phone from 2021, but at $699, it’s yours for a very good price, and you get the top version the company made.

OnePlus has reduced the OnePlus 10 Pro to $799 for Prime Day, but for this you get the 8GB/128GB model and not the top -- and recently released -- 12GB/256GB version. For that, you’ll have to pay $969. The $699 OnePlus 9 Pro has 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage space, but we're not recommending it because of the RAM. It’s the additional storage that’s important here. Neither OnePlus phone has a MicroSD card slot, so you’ve only got the internal storage to rely on. It's a good plan to get as much as possible.

Camera shootout: Samsung Galaxy S22 vs. OnePlus 10 Pro
Samsung Galaxy S22 and OnePlus 10 Pro

The OnePlus 10 Pro is turning heads with its brave new design, top-tier specifications, and upgraded camera hardware. Samsung, on the other hand, has armed the Galaxy S22 with a bigger primary camera without paying much attention to its outer garb. The OnePlus offering wants to make a splash as the company’s best phone on the market, while the Galaxy S22 is Samsung’s entry-level flagship, with far modest camera hardware compared to its Ultra sibling. But they are both similarly priced. Wondering how the two would fare in a camera shootout? Read on to find out.
Camera specs
Both the phones offer a triple-camera setup in the familiar wide + ultrawide + telephoto configuration. The Galaxy S22 is equipped with a 50-megapixel (1.0 micrometer, 85-degree field of view [FOV] F1.8 lens, 1/1.56-inch sensor, optical image stabilization) primary shooter, paired with a 12-megapixel ultrawide-angle snapper (1.4 micrometer, 120-degree FOV, F2.2 lens, 1/2.55-inch sensor), and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera (1.0 micrometer, 36-degree FOV, 1/3.94-inch image sensor) with 3x optical zoom output and 30x hybrid zoom range. Selfie duties are handled by a 10-megapixel (1.22 micrometer, 80-degree FOV, F2.2 lens, 1/3.24-inch sensor) camera.

The OnePlus 10 Pro has beefier imaging hardware to offer. It packs a 48-megapixel (1/1.43-inch sensor, 1.12 micrometer, F1.8 lens, optical image stabilization) main camera, a 50-megapixel ultrawide-angle (1/2.76-inch sensor, 150-degree FOV) shooter, and an 8-megapixel telephoto (F2.4 lens, 1.0 micrometer, optical image stabilization) camera with 3.3x optical zoom range. On the front is an updated 32-megapixel camera with electronic image stabilization.
Daylight photos
On their own, both the phones feature a very capable primary camera, but the Galaxy S22 edges its OnePlus rival in some key areas. The Samsung Galaxy S22 goes for a more saturated look in daylight photos by default and produces a better contrast than the OnePlus 10 Pro’s main camera, which struggles with white balance under natural light. Both the phones produce terrific photos on their own, but the Galaxy S22’s camera algorithms race ahead when it comes to retaining surface textures. There is also less noise in pictures produced by the Galaxy S22.

Realme is the new OnePlus, and the GT 2 Pro’s prowess proves it
Realme GT 2 Pro and OnePlus 10 Pro camera modules

What has happened to OnePlus? Once the darling of the shrewd smartphone bargain hunter, the company has lost its way with the latest OnePlus 10 Pro and left itself open to being usurped by a cheaper newcomer. What’s worse (for OnePlus, not you) is the challenger comes from within. It’s the Realme GT 2 Pro, and it’s practically the same phone as the OnePlus 10 Pro, just cheaper.

Let’s look at the two together, and see why saving some money and ignoring the marketing is the wise decision here.
How much?
Buyers in the U.S. will pay $899 for the 8GB/128GB OnePlus 10 Pro, while in the U.K. the phone costs 799 British pounds, or 899 pounds for the 12GB/256GB version. The Realme GT 2 Pro costs 699 pounds, or about $910, for the 12GB/256GB model.
