Poco’s X4 Pro will look familiar to fans of another phone

Poco, the smartphone company that started out life as a part of Xiaomi but has since mostly gone its own way, has announced the Poco X4 Pro 5G, a midrange phone with a truly monster camera. But before you start thinking this an all-new, never-seen-before smartphone from Poco, understand that it’s only new on the outside, because inside it appears to be identical to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G. This is the first time Poco has joined in the fun with a new phone at Mobile World Congress, the industry trade show taking place in Spain this week.

The Poco X4 Pro comes in several colors.

The Poco X4 Pro certainly has an eye-catching look due to the huge camera module taking up almost a third of the back panel, and it comes in two very bright colors: Laser Blue and Poco Yellow. You can settle on a basic Laser Black version if you’re not much of an extrovert, though. Once you’re past the look of the phone, the specifications will be familiar to anyone who has looked at the Mi 11 Pro 5G.

This means the phone has a 6.67-inch AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, a 2400 x 1080 pixel resolution, and a DCI-P3 color gamut. It has Xiaomi’s latest MIUI 13 interface built over Android 12, and it’s all powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 processor and 8GB of RAM. There’s a 5,000mAh battery with 67-watt fast charging that takes about 40 minutes to reach 100% capacity.

The 108-megapixel camera has a 1/1.52-inch sensor, and is most likely Samsung’s Isocell HM2 camera seen on a variety of different phones from Xiaomi, Honor, and Vivo. It’s joined by an 8MP wide angle camera and a 2MP macro camera, while a 16MP camera takes care of selfies. Camera features include slow-motion video, a super macro mode, and different filters for video. The phone also has stereo speakers.

The Poco X4 Pro will be available starting March 2 in Europe, with a U.K. launch to follow. There are two versions, a 6GB/128GB model for 299 euros/$336 and an 8GB/256GB version for 349 euros/$392. No U.S. release details have been provided, and Poco has not released a device in North America officially before, so that’s unlikely to change with the X4 Pro.

Xiaomi’s Poco M4 Pro comes to Europe toting a MediaTek processor, sub-$300 price tag
The Poco M4 in all three color options.

Six months after the launch of the Poco M3 Pro 5G, Xiaomi’s sub-brand Poco Global has announced the launch of its successor, the Poco M4 Pro, in select markets. The new phone improves upon the existing M3 Pro with incremental upgrades to the design, camera, and the rest of the hardware. Xiaomi has done a great job at masking the fact that the M4 Pro is just a rebranded Redmi Note 11 -- a phone that is only on sale in China as of this writing.

Like other Poco handsets, the Poco M4 Pro has an in-your face design that's largely accentuated by the bright color options: Poco Yellow and Cool Blue. Only the Power Black variant offers some degree of subtlety. The rear panel of the phone draws heavily from another low-cost Poco offering from 2021 -- the Poco M3 -- and is designed to make the camera module look much larger than it actually is.

You’ll have to imagine how fun the new OnePlus Nord 2 x Pac-Man phone looks
The OnePlus Nord 2's camera module.

OnePlus is up to its old promotional tricks again. It has announced a collaboration between it and the ever-popular Pac-Man video game franchise, resulting in the OnePlus Nord 2 x Pac-Man Edition smartphone. OnePlus’ marketing department is building anticipation in a frustrating way by telling us how we can win one of the new phones and promising early access codes to the online store if we’re unsuccessful, but not actually showing us the phone at all yet.

The Poco M3 Pro 5G is the latest low-cost 5G phone to use the MediaTek 700 chip
poco m3 pro 5g news colors

Poco Global, the smartphone company best known for high-performance, low-cost phones like the Poco F1 and Poco F2 Pro, has announced the Poco M3 Pro 5G. The new phone is the latest in a growing trend of cheap 5G phones, made possible by using competitively priced processors like the MediaTek Dimensity 700, which powers the Poco M3 Pro 5G and the recently announced Realme 8 5G.

It’s the first time Poco has worked with MediaTek, which is working hard to increase its influence in 5G. The Dimensity 700 is a 2.2GHz octa-core chip built using a 7mn process, and although not MediaTek’s flagship 5G chip, is still designed to cope with games, video, and other power-intensive activities. In the M3 Pro 5G, it’s paired to either 4GB or 6GB of RAM, which come with 64GB or 128GB of storage space respectively.
