Realme’s next cheap flagship phone will use Samsung’s 108MP camera

Realme has shared a look at its upcoming flagship smartphones, which comprise the Realme 8 series. Following the Realme 7 series, the company is looking to innovate and improve on its camera performance from the last generation, and it’s doing so with Samsung’s 108-megapixel, ISOCELL HM2 camera sensor. Realme is another phone company from the BBK Electronics stable, alongside OnePlus, Oppo, and Vivo, and is getting a reputation for making incredible value devices.

Launching a generation after Samsung’s ISOCELL HM1 camera found in the Galaxy S20 Ultra, the ISOCELL HM2 predates the ISOCELL HM3 camera in Samsung’s new S21 series by just a few months, but it’s still impressive. Samsung says the “image sensor is perfectly engineered for today’s thinner, lighter smartphones, so you can carry a pro-grade camera right in your pocket wherever you go”.

Why would you want a 108MP camera? The explanation can be quite technical, but it comes down to producing high-quality photos in more lighting conditions, and with a greater degree of detail. When combined with clever software, the results can be outstanding, just like we’ve seen with the Galaxy S21 Ultra. When high-megapixel count phone cameras first arrived, the pixels were so tiny you’d lose a lot of clarity and detail in processing, and cameras like the ISOCELL HM2 are designed to avoid that.

Realme also notes an unusual 3x in-sensor zoom feature. In essence, it’s a digital crop feature enabled by the overall higher resolution of the camera and pixel binning technology, where multiple pixels are gathered together to make one, even bigger pixel to let in more light. Realme says it will capture eight 12MP photos and combine them into one, producing an image it claims will show more detail than some optical telephoto cameras. Other features of the camera include the ability to take time-lapse videos of starry skies and a set of new filters for portrait shots.

The 108MP camera is expected to arrive on the forthcoming Realme 8 Pro. While the 108MP camera will capture headlines and attention, getting the most from it requires competent software running behind the scenes. Most mainstream phones today come with a 12MP camera, including the highly capable Google Pixel 5. Even Samsung struggled to capitalize on the 108MP camera’s potential at first, as seen on the Galaxy S20 Ultra, so it will be interesting to see how Realme — still a newcomer in the mobile world — handles it.

Realme has not confirmed the launch date for the Realme 8 series phones, at least one of which will come with the 108MP camera, but if it’s talking about the camera, the release may not be far away. The fast turnaround is a surprise, as the Realme 7 series only arrived in October 2020. Realme sells its smartphones in the U.K., Europe, and Asia. It has so far not announced a U.S. release for its phones.

The Realme 8 5G shows the exciting future of cheap 5G phones
realme 8 5g hands on features price photos release date back

The Realme 8 5G, as the name suggests, has a 5G modem inside ready to connect you to the fastest mobile data connection available, now or in the future. Yet the phone costs just 200 British pounds, or about $280 at today's currency conversion rate, meaning that 5G is no longer only found on pricey mid- and high-specification phones.

But cheap phones can also be substandard, especially when an “expensive” feature like 5G gets slotted in to grab some headlines. The Realme 8 5G is cheap, but does it feel like it’s cheap?
MediaTek lends a hand
How does Realme offer a phone with 5G for such a low price? One of the reasons is the phone uses a MediaTek Dimensity 700 processor, rather than a Qualcomm chip seen in mid-range smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G and the Google Pixel 4a 5G. MediaTek has long been committed to making affordable 5G-capable mobile processors, but the resulting hardware doesn’t always get a wide international release, but that will change with the Realme 8 5G, as it’ll be out in Europe and the U.K. in May.

New Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro has a 108MP camera and a 144Hz screen to take on Samsung
xiaomi mi 10t pro news top

Xiaomi is not letting Samsung, OnePlus, and Google steal all the reasonably priced exciting smartphone fun, and has launched the Mi 10T Pro. It starts at 599 euros, or about $700, putting it in direct competition with the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE and the OnePlus 8 (soon to be 8T), plus around the same price we expect the Pixel 5 to cost.

There are several standout features that make the Mi 10T Pro worth considering, starting with a 108-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization on the back. Xiaomi and Samsung worked together on developing the 108MP camera technology, and here it comes with some new features to entice you away from Samsung’s version. These include six long exposure modes, such as one where a static subject can be isolated against a blurred moving background, plus a burst mode that converts stills into video, and a selection of new filters.

Motorola’s flagship Moto Edge+ packs 6.7-inch curved OLED, 108MP camera
moto edge plus feature

Motorola took a year off from the flagship smartphone market in 2019, but it didn’t give up. The company has returned with the Moto Edge+, a new Android flagship with a 6.7-inch curved OLED display, 5G, and a 108MP camera. It's a Verizon Wireless exclusive that sells for $999.
A huge curved display and a headset jack
I’ll start with the display, since it’s stands out to me most. The 6.7-inch display follows the trend of huge flagship phones but adds its own twist: A 90-degree wraparound OLED display. While wraparound displays aren’t new, the Moto Edge+ has particularly dramatic curves. As a result, the phone has no noticeable bezel on either side (when held viewed from the front).
