Samsung reportedly working on Bluetooth earbuds with Bixby

Although Samsung reportedly canceled its Bixby-powered smart speaker, there still might be plans to incorporate the voice assistant into other devices. Samsung is apparently working in partnership with another South Korean company to develop Bluetooth earbuds with Bixby built into it, ET News reports.

To add to the list of smart home speakers — from Amazon’s Echo, to Apple’s Homepod, and the Google Home — Samsung was reportedly developing its own AI-equipped smart speaker with Bixby built in. The original plan was for the smart speaker to be featured in a variety of devices throughout the home, including appliances.

The latest report from South Korean publication The Investor indicates the device may have been canceled completely due to a lack of marketability — but it could also be due to Bixby’s past issues. While voice recognition problems apparently halted Samsung’s previous attempts at launching a smart speaker, Bixby also had an English language delay on the Galaxy S8 over three months after the phone’s release.

The report in terms of the Bluetooth-powered earbuds makes the inevitable comparison to Apple’s Airpods — the wireless earbuds that also connect to Bluetooth, and can trigger Siri for any question or command you may have. With Bixby earbuds, you’ll essentially be able to do the same things — play music and use the voice assistant. You’ll also apparently be able to give commands and receive answers with Bixby even when your smartphone isn’t close by.

One difference between the two competitors is the “Noise Blocking Technology” Bixby is supposedly releasing with the earbuds — a feature the AirPods don’t have. With the technology, users will be able to block out all background noise other than their own voice in order to receive accurate answers from Bixby even while in loud and crowded environments.

ET News suggests Samsung and the South Korean company are already running tests to link Bixby with Bluetooth earbuds — likely to be released at the same time as the Galaxy Note 8 release in September. It is yet to be determined whether the company will supply the earbuds as a bundle with the smartphone or if the earbuds will be sold as a separate accessory.

Digital Trends first revealed the existence of Bixby in March, following interviews with the head of research and development at Samsung Mobile Communications Business Group in South Korea.

“Philosophically, what we’re looking at is revolutionizing the interface,” Injong Rhee told Digital Trends.

This Galaxy S23 Ultra case gives Samsung users a huge iPhone 14 feature
A person holding the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Samsung has finally revealed the next generation of Galaxy smartphones: the Galaxy S23, S23 Plus, and S23 Ultra. Though you can preorder the Galaxy S23 right now, the phones won’t be shipping until February 17, 2023. But you can always start prepping for your shiny new toy by picking up some of the best Galaxy S23 cases and S23 screen protectors right now.

I did notice one interesting case from Spigen, one of the more well-known and popular case makers with plenty of affordable offerings. I’m specifically pointing out the Spigen Ultra Hybrid OneTap MagSafe Ring case for the S23 Ultra. I’m not sure why this case is only for the Ultra and not the regular S23 or S23 Plus, but it is doing something that I wish all case manufacturers would do — for both Android and iPhone. And, yes, it's one of the best Galaxy S23 Ultra cases on the market.

Forget AirPods — here’s why I use Samsung earbuds with my iPhone
Galaxy Buds 2 Pro with iPhone 13 Pro Max on a table

AirPods Pro 2 are the go-to flagship earbuds for an iPhone user; you get all the ecosystem benefits alongside brilliant sound quality and active noise cancellation (ANC). But what if you use your iPhone with a Windows laptop, or what if you have an Android phone as a secondary device? That’s where you’ll require a second pair of earbuds — unless you can find something that works well with the iPhone as well as Windows and Android. Surprisingly, the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro are one such product.

I’ve been using the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro with my iPhone 13 Pro Max and Galaxy Z Fold 4. While there are obvious reasons for someone in the Galaxy ecosystem to purchase the flagship Samsung earbuds, they work shockingly well with an iPhone — even if there are a couple of caveats.

Forget Apple’s newest iPad — the Galaxy Tab S8 should be your next tablet
Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 alongside the tenth-gen iPad.

For a while now, the tablet industry has been rather boring. That's not due to the lack of compelling devices, but because of lopsided competition. Apple’s iPads have reigned supreme, and with the arrival of iPadOS, Apple made it clear that it was serious at playing the tablet game.

The dominance has been particularly evident at the entry level, where the $329 iPad has been the default choice for an affordable, reliable tablet. That’s not the case anymore in 2022. The "entry-level" 10th-gen iPad now starts at $449. It looks fresh, offers USB-C nirvana, and comes with a new Magic Keyboard to sell its computing chops.
