Samsung could launch a clamshell-style foldable phone in 2020, report says

The Galaxy Fold may not have been the successful launch Samsung was hoping for,  but the company’s not giving up on foldable phones. We still have no word on whether the Galaxy Fold will come out, but a new report suggests Samsung is already working on a second foldable phone — one with a clamshell design.

The report comes from Korean publication ET News, which has a history of accurately reporting on Korean companies like Samsung and LG. ET News said production on the clamshell Samsung foldable phone will begin in November, with the official launch set for the first half of 2020.

The new device will reportedly sport a 6.7-inch display, which is the same display size as the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G. Unlike the Galaxy Fold, which folds like a book, the clamshell foldable phone resembles a normal phone that will fold vertically in the middle. It means the phone will be compact when folded up. It’s akin to the foldable phone seen in Netflix’s latest season of ‘Black Mirror.’

Samsung isn’t the only company working on a foldable phone with a clamshell-like design. Motorola is rumored to be working on  one under the Razr brand. There’s no specific release date for the new Razr phone just yet, but some reports indicate the device could launch as soon as this summer.

The news isn’t all that surprising, as companies often develop products a year or two ahead of launch. Samsung likely has been tinkering with alternative foldable phone concepts, though the poor launch of the Galaxy Fold could have accelerated development plans for the next model.

The Galaxy Fold was set to launch in April, but tech reviewers found durability issues with the display. It prompted Samsung to ask for review units back and delay the consumer launch of the phone; the company has yet to announce a new shipping date for pre-ordered phones, and AT&T has gone so far as to cancel Fold pre-ordersOne misstep with its foldable phone isn’t going to put Samsung down, as foldable phones will soon be a major step forward in the future of smartphones. We’re expecting several major companies to release a foldable smartphone in the next few years — including Apple.

I know how Samsung can make the Galaxy Z Fold 5 perfect
A person holding a partially open Galaxy Z Fold 4.

I recently spent a wonderful week using the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, and I stand by my original review assessment: This phone is so good that it should be your next smartphone. However, time is running out for me to say that, as the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is almost certainly going to launch soon, and a new model always changes things.

Spending time with the Z Fold 4 has revealed whether the Z Fold 4 is still worth buying today, even as the sequel’s release draws near — and also shown me how Samsung can make the Galaxy Z Fold 5 close to perfect.
Can the Galaxy Z Fold 5 be perfect?

Asus’ latest Android phone could be a big threat to the Galaxy S23 Ultra
Holding the Asus Zenfone 9 to show how it's able to be used one-handed.

After plenty of speculation and waiting, Asus is finally ready to launch its next flagship smartphone, the Zenfone 10, at the end of this month. First announced late last night on the Asus Taiwan Instagram account, the Zenfone 10 will be officially revealed in full and launch on June 29.

Asus tends to make pretty solid devices despite not being quite as popular as the smartphone giants like Samsung, Google, and Apple. But the Zenfone 10 looks like it's shaping up to be one of the best Android phones on the market. Based on a handful of videos posted on the Asus website on a page devoted to the Zenfone 10 launch event, the phone's specs make it seem like it might be able to go toe-to-toe with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra with one key difference: its size.

The Huawei P60 Pro held in a person's hand.

Apple, Samsung, and Google could all learn something from Huawei’s latest flagship smartphone, as it’s one of the best-looking, most ergonomic, and tantalizingly unique mobile devices I’ve seen and held in ages.

Above is the Huawei P60 Pro, and the stunning finish is called Rococo Pearl. Here's what makes it special — and why I'd love to see other companies take such care.
