Samsung unveils Galaxy A42, a budget 5G smartphone, and Trio wireless charger

Samsung has announced a series of new mobile products at a virtual event today including the Galaxy A42, which the phone maker claims is its most affordable 5G smartphone yet. The company also introduced a new Trio wireless charging station that can simultaneously top up three devices, and the budget Galaxy Tab A7 Android tablet.

The products were notably not released in conjunction with the IFA technology show in Germany, which is officially ramping up right now. Samsung announced in July that it would skip the show, Europe’s largest tech fair, in favor of holding its own events.

While details were kept to the minimum, Samsung did share a few specifications. The Galaxy A42 offers a 6.6-inch OLED screen and an array of four cameras on the back. It’s expected to go on sale later this year. Samsung didn’t confirm the rest of the hardware but SamMobile reports the Galaxy A42 is rumored to run on the Snapdragon 690 processor, 5,000mAh battery, 4GB of RAM, and carry a 48-megapixel primary camera. As per a blog post on Samsung Germany’s website, the Galaxy A42 5G costs 369 euros (about $440).

We’ve reached out to Samsung for more information on the Galaxy A42’s availability and we’ll update the story when we hear back.

The new Trio wireless charger succeeds Samsung’s Wireless Charger Duo which was capable of charging two devices at a time. Trio builds upon that with additional space for a third device. Samsung didn’t say at how quickly Trio can top up three devices. It will cost 99 euros (about $120) in Europe and will be available in two color options: Black and white.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A7, as the name suggests, is the latest budget alternative to the company’s premium Tab S7 lineup. It has a 10.4-inch screen (with a resolution of 2000 x 1200 pixels), a total of four Dolby Atmos-compatible speakers, and an ample 7040mAh battery. It’s powered by Qualcomm’s midrange Snapdragon 662 chipset and does not support 5G connectivity. The Galaxy Tab A7 will launch sometime later this year in three color variants: Gray, silver, and gold. Its LTE variant is priced at 282 euros (about $335), while the Wi-Fi-only variant will set you back by 223 euros (about $265).

Samsung also has a new fitness tracker: the 50-euro Galaxy Fit 2. It offers the usual trappings you’d expect from such a device including 15-day battery life, a heart rate sensor, sleep tracking, and a 1.1-inch OLED screen for updates.

CES 2023: Samsung’s new Galaxy A14 looks like a killer $200 Android deal
Samsung announces the Galaxy A14 5G at CES 2023.

Samsung today announced an update to one of its more popular phone lines -- the A-Series. It's updating the well-received Galaxy A13 with a new A14 this week. This new model comes with Android 13, a big screen and battery, 5G support, and a decent camera set-up for a price that won't break the bank.

Samsung highlights a few things over the A13 and A13 5G, including the more modern design with flatter edges popularised by the iPhone 12, support for fast charging, and high-resolution cameras.  The A1X series are low-priced phones, so each new feature comes with a compromise.

I don’t want to see 5G on any phone in 2023
OnePlus 7 Pro 5G

I don’t want to see 5G on any phone in 2023. Why? It’s a complete waste of space, nobody actually uses it, and to the average person on the street, it means absolutely nothing. Yet, it has been a regular feature on new phones for years now.

Before everyone gets all uptight and starts stabbing out an angry email, I’m not talking about 5G, I’m talking about the tiresome practice of adding 5G to the end of phone names. We get it, it has 5G. So do the vast majority of phones out there, and it’s time to differentiate those that don’t, rather than those that do.
Enough already

Samsung’s new rugged phone and tablet tout 5G and 5 years of updates
Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 4 Pro and Galaxy XCover 6 Pro.

Samsung is adding a couple of new rugged devices to its portfolio – the Galaxy Tab Active 4 Pro tablet and the Galaxy XCover 6 Pro phone. Both are targeted at enterprise usage and frontline workers braving harsh conditions. The physical buttons on the phone and tablet can be programmed for a variety of tasks such as sending emergency SOS messages or enabling the walkie-talkie function.

Both the gadgets feature a military-grade build and come with a MIL-STD-810H certification that covers everything from water exposure and high temperature to extreme vibrations and high-altitude operations. Notably, these two are also the first 5G-ready rugged devices in Samsung’s portfolio, which is a neat addition. A Wi-Fi 6E upgrade is also part of the package, but there's no satellite connectivity à la the iPhone 14 series.
