Rumors and renders reveal Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 5G

Samsung is set to launch its Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G and Galaxy Z Fold 3 in the summer if rumors are to be believed. New reports shared over the past month have painted a fairly detailed picture of what to expect from the most interesting new-generation smartphones to be released over the past couple of years.

The renders are courtesy of phone leaker Evan Blass, who has a reliable track record, and they show off the unfolded Galaxy Z Fold 3, as well as the rear camera of the Z Flip 3. A second render of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 was also published, with the phone paired to an S-Pen, adding credence to reports that Samsung will be shipping the Fold with the S-Pen this year. Another set of renders came from GizNext, with a detailed look at the Galaxy Z Flip 3, and a follow-up from 91Mobiles and OnLeaks showed the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in more detail.

When it comes to the internals of these two phones, reports are varied, but a few things are consistent. Both are claimed to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, the same chip used in the Samsung Galaxy S21 and OnePlus 9. For the Galaxy Z Flip 3, some reports say it will have a 1.83-inch external display, a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED 120Hz main display, and up to 256GB of internal storage. In July, a detailed report shared that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will keep the same storage options as the older Fold 2, so buyers can expect to have up to 512GB of storage paired with 12GB of RAM as well.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is expected to have a very usable 6.2-inch display on the front, with a 7.5-inch 120Hz QHD resolution display on the inside. It is said to have a 4,500 mAh battery, likely with fast charging from 25W, as Samsung typically offers on its flagships, along with IP ratings for water and dust resistance, a first for Samsung’s foldables.

As for cameras, there are few specifics on the cameras other than what is visually apparent from the renders. Going off those, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 will have a dual-camera system, while the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will have as many as three cameras. It’s not clear what the exact specs of the individual cameras will be, but a wide-angle camera paired with an ultrawide is likely for the Galaxy Z Flip 3, and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is said to have a 12-megapixel wide, a 12MP ultrawide, and a 12MP telephoto lens. Interestingly, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is expected to come with Samsung’s first under-display camera, featuring a 16MP selfie camera on the inside and a 10MP camera on the outer display.

Color-wise, the report from GizNext says the Galaxy Z Flip 3 will ship in dark green, light violet, beige, gray, black, pink, dark blue, and white, while 91Mobiles claims the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will come in black, pink, and green, though Samsung is prone to launching region-specific color options.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G and Galaxy Z Fold 3 are expected to launch together at a Samsung Unpacked event set to take place in August. While the company has yet to officially announce the exact timing, new rumors from often-reliable technology pundit and device leaker Jon Prosser place this date as August 3, while a later report places the launch event during the second week of August, with a sales date at the end of the month. Additional reports claim that Samsung will price the new folding phones at around $1,600, which is 20% less than their immediate predecessors.

3 reasons I’m disappointed by the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 with its main display open.

During its Galaxy Unpacked July 2023 event, Samsung dropped a bunch of new products for everyone — from next-generation foldable phones to new wearables and a diverse range of tablets. One of the new device reveals was the Galaxy Z Flip 5, which has been expected along with the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

Though I’m still fairly new to the scene of foldables, I have seen the appeal — and in some cases, I prefer the form factor over the standard glass slab that most phones are nowadays. But honestly, there isn’t a lot with the new Galaxy Z Flip 5 that’s drawing me in. Instead, it’s a bit underwhelming.

Samsung just held its latest Galaxy Unpacked event in Seoul, South Korea, and it had a whole slew of new products to unveil to the masses. We have three new Galaxy Tab S9 tablets, the Galaxy Watch 6 series, the Galaxy Z Fold 5, and the Galaxy Z Flip 5.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is sure to impress with an all-new 3.4-inch cover display that Samsung has called the "Flex Window." You can access some new widgets from the Flex Window, including a multi-widget view for more at once, and even run apps on the cover display (with some caveats). The Z Flip 5 also has a new Flex Hinge that looks aesthetically pleasing and provides a solid foldable experience. The cameras are also slightly better, with a new lens coating that should cut down on unwanted lens flares.

Samsung’s midyear Unpacked event has just concluded, and it featured the usual slate of big foldable and wearable announcements. As expected, we saw Samsung unveil the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5, a new Galaxy Tab S9 lineup, and a pair of Galaxy Watch 6 models representing a comeback for the much-loved Galaxy Watch Classic style.

Needless to say, there was a lot to take in today, and some details can easily get glossed over in the midst of all the big tentpole product announcements. While Samsung’s new product lineup is undoubtedly exciting, the upgrades over last year’s models are more iterative — and in some cases even lateral — but Samsung still had a few surprises for us.
