Samsung teases Note 10 feature as invites go out for its next Galaxy Unpacked

[Invitation] Samsung Galaxy UNPACKED 2019: The Next Galaxy

Mark your calendar: The next Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event will take place on August 7 in New York City. Samsung confirmed the event’s date and location to Digital Trends, which had already leaked last week. A few hours after confirming to Digital Trends, the Samsung Mobile Twitter account also tweeted out a confirmation.

The event will occur at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn at 4 p.m. ET, and it’s widely expected to see Samsung launch the next Note smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10. The venue is the same as last year’s Note 9 launch event.

The invitation shows a GIF of a black S Pen drawing a camera, suggesting there will be a connection between the stylus — which is one of the key features that differentiates the Galaxy Note series from Samsung’s Galaxy S-series — and the camera. The camera doesn’t look like leaked images of the triple-camera lenses on the back of the phone, which infers that it’s specifically referencing the selfie camera. Last year’s Note 9 added a feature that allowed the S Pen to act as a remote control for the camera.

Samsung’s Note 10 is purported to have a single hole-punch selfie camera — just like the Galaxy S10 and S10e — and patents suggest Samsung may put the selfie camera inside the stylus, which would allow for thinner bezels on the front, and more utility for the stylus. That could be what we’re looking at in this GIF.

The Note range doesn’t sell quite as many units as the Galaxy S series, but it’s still one of the biggest phone releases for the year. Other rumors suggest the phone will have a triple-lens camera on the back, which lines up with the existing Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus range, which have triple-lens cameras as well. Leaked renders also point to a 6.3-inch edge-to-edge display and no headphone jack. Under the hood, the phone will likely offer a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, and there may even be a model with 5G connectivity, making it as future-facing a phone as the Note line ever has been. You can see more rumors on the new phone in our handy roundup.

The Galaxy Note 10 likely won’t be the only product at Galaxy Unpacked. Last year, the company announced the Samsung Galaxy Watch, which Samsung positioned as a device that could go head to head with the Apple Watch. New rumors about a Galaxy Watch Active 2 recently cropped up, so there’s a chance we can see a follow up at this event. The company also announced the Galaxy Home smart speaker, last year, which has yet to launch, so there’s a small chance we may hear news on that front. The company may even take the opportunity to discuss the Galaxy Fold, its foldable phone that’s currently in limbo after display errors prevented Samsung from launching the device on time.

Updated on July 2, 2019: Samsung Mobile’s Twitter account has confirmed the confirmation.

Timer running on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 cover screen.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 has been revealed, and it's flippin' marvelous. So far, it's largely just Samsung that has defined the nascent flip smartphone market, and while flipping and folding phones haven't quite broken into the mainstream yet, the Z Flip 5 is sure to tempt more and more people into buying into the future of smartphone design. The biggest new addition to the Z Flip 5 is the much larger outer screen, which is a big upgrade over the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4's much smaller display and worthy of rivaling the Motorola Razr Plus's impressively large outer display.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is sure to be a technological marvel, packed with the latest and most powerful hardware Samsung can get its hands on. But what about a piece of very old tech? What about the humble 3.5mm headphone jack? Does Samsung's latest flip phone have room for a headphone jack, or does the Z Flip 5 follow the same trend of the last few years in omitting the venerable port?

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: two things I hate (and two I love)
Main display on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5.

Samsung is in its fifth generation of selling foldables. While the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is its biggest upgrade to the clamshell form factor, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is an experiential upgrade this year – which might cause some problems for Samsung.

The year is 2023, and more smartphone manufacturers are joining the foldable bandwagon. With the Google Pixel Fold and the upcoming OnePlus folding phone, Samsung finally has some competition in the U.S. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 doesn’t seem like a device that I would instantly buy over others.

Is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 waterproof?
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 with its main display open.

Samsung has unveiled its newest foldable smartphones — the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. Both the new Fold and the Flip come with significant improvements, including a thinner profile, a new hinge mechanism that keeps the phones shut tight when folded, and a bespoke Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 "for Galaxy" chipset. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 clamshell also earns a new flex-worthy design upgrade over last year's Galaxy Z Flip 4 with its new and larger 3.4-inch outer display. It can now run numerous full-size apps and supports full keyboard input.

The improved hinge and the new display on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 sure make the clamshell phone desirable. On top of that, Samsung's proactive approach with frequent software updates -- and the promise of four Android platform upgrades and five years of security updates -- make the Flip 5 highly desirable to those who wish for a compact and swanky phone. Starting at just a penny short of $1,000, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is also one of the lightest purchases on the pocket for anyone who wants to try folding smartphones.
