Samsung has yet to officially announce sales figures for its flagship phones the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, but unofficial results are starting to appear online. The Korea Herald reported that despite Samsung’s earlier boasts of high preorders, the company may have sold slightly more than 10 million S6 phones in the first month.
“The sales of the Galaxy S6 series have already surpassed 10 million,” a high-ranking Samsung official said speaking with the Korea Herald. It’s unknown if that number is accurate, or if it has increased recently. Analysts are still awaiting official numbers, as all that has been available is speculation, estimates, and high hopes. While the quote from the “high-ranking official” sounds quite positive in its tone, the numbers paint a different picture.
Earlier this year, Samsung estimated that it would sell 70 million units of the new phones in 2015 and boasted over 20 million preorders before the phone’s release. While the 10 million figure is certainly vague, it does not exactly fall in line with previous expectations. Up until now, only one Korean news outlet has covered this story, so it’s possible the information isn’t accurate.
It’s expected that Samsung will reveal more sales information over the coming days, as official sales numbers get tallied. Galaxy S6 sales need to be strong to boost the company’s image. The Galaxy S5 also started strong, selling 11 million units in the same time it took the S4 to sell 10 million, but soon after, it was deemed a flop. Samsung ended up selling 40 percent fewer units than expected, which put the final nail in the coffin for its abysmal 2014 fiscal year.
Naturally, Samsung has high hopes for the Galaxy S6, which is widely regarded as one of the most attractive and powerful smartphones the company has ever made. It features wireless charging, a sleek glass and metal design, and very high-end specs. Additionally, the S6 Edge sports a curved display for added beauty. It’s too early to tell whether the Galaxy S6 will triumph or not, but we’ll keep you posted when Samsung reveals its official numbers.
