Samsung is one of the most popular brands when it comes to mainstream foldable phones, as it has the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 available right now. But we are expecting the Galaxy Z Flip 5 later this year, which should once again give us one of the most compact smartphone experiences around.

Though the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is good for techies, it does fall short in some areas — including battery life, camera quality, and the tiny cover screen. But Samsung has a chance to rectify all of these issues with the Z Flip 5, as there have been rumors that Samsung is making some big changes.

Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5!

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: design and display

There has been a near-constant stream of rumors regarding the design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. Based on everything we’ve seen, we’re expecting the clamshell design from the Flip 4 to be nearly identical on the Flip 5. We’re once again expecting a 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate on the inside. That said, one major aspect of the Flip 5’s design seems to be pretty different from the Flip 4: the hinge.

Ross Young tweeted in December 2022 that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 will have a new hinge design that will help reduce the visibility of the seam on the display. One of the biggest problems with foldable devices is that you’re able to see a crease on the display due to the nature of how foldables work, but hopefully, this design change will mitigate that somewhat.

According to Young, Samsung may utilize a “waterdrop” display, which would allow a section of the interior screen to essentially roll inside the phone itself, which would prevent creasing. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 would also be made with lighter materials.

While the cover screen on the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is just 1.9 inches, the Z Flip 5 should have a much larger display on the outside. Young claims the cover display will be about 3.4 inches across, and several other leakers have now also corroborated that display size. Though it’s a larger cover screen for sure, it still won’t be taking up the entire outer cover, but it will definitely be more useful than its predecessor’s.

There have been plenty of different renders and rumors regarding how the cover display will actually look and share the space on the outside of the phone with the Flip 5’s dual camera setup. The most credible renders so far have come from reputable leaker OnLeaks in a collaboration with MediaPeanut that show exactly what we should expect from the Flip 5’s cover screen.

As seen in the images above, the 3.4-inch display will cover the majority of the cover screen by stretching upward slightly to fill some of the space next to the two cameras, which have now been flipped horizontally to make more space for the display. If these renders are accurate, then the Flip 5’s cover screen will be able to happily hang its hat on being a significant upgrade from the microscopic display found on the Flip 4.

Previous rumors said that the cover display may actually be made of two displays, a square screen that covers the majority of the surface area of the cover and a much smaller rectangle to display notifications in-line with the cameras. While that’s not completely out of the question since we still haven’t officially seen the Flip 5 from Samsung, OnLeaks is usually right on the money when it comes to leaked renders, so it’s probably safe to assume that the dual-screen design isn’t happening.

In terms of color, Ross Young listed a handful of different options that buyers will have when the Galaxy Z Flip 5 eventually launches later this year. Young says to expect Blue, Green, Platinum (silver), Yellow, and the “higher volume colors” Beige, Gray, Black, Light Green, Light Blue, and Light Pink.

As we get closer to the Galaxy Unpacked July 2023 event, some new renders have popped up for the Galaxy Z Flip 5, along with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and other expected devices.

This is likely what we will be seeing once the event happens, and it seems to confirm the larger cover display screen, as well as a new hinge design. It also looks like the Z Flip 5 will come in four colors, including a pastel mint green and pink.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: specs

Up until recently, we haven’t heard much about what to expect from the Galaxy Z Flip 5, but reputable leaker Yogesh Brar tweeted out the full specifications, and the foldable looks like it’s a solid step up from its predecessor based on its upgraded processor.

As expected, the Z Flip 5 is ditching the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 from last year and will be outfitted with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The chipset will be a first for Galaxy foldable devices, but it’s been used in the entire Galaxy S23 family, so we know that it’s both reliable and a solid powerhouse of a processor — making the Flip 5 a decent upgrade from the Flip 4 even if much of the rest of the phone is the same.

In addition to the new chipset, the Z Flip 5 will come with 8GB of RAM and have two different storage options: 128 and 256GB. There’s no difference between the Flip 5 and the Flip 4 in that regard, but, as mentioned above, the new chipset seems like it’ll do enough to distinguish the Flip 5, thanks to its newfound processing power and better power efficiency.

Though the cameras on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 were pretty much the same as on the Z Flip 3, it left a lot to be desired compared to other flagship Samsung devices, as well as the competition.

There hasn’t been a lot of talk about what to expect with the cameras on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. But leaker Yogesh Brar believes the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 will have a pair of 12MP rear cameras, which would be the wide and ultrawide lenses. This matches the specs of its predecessor. However, it may have larger sensors, which would help capture more light, resulting in better photos.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: battery and charging

One of the biggest flaws of the Z Flip 4 was the battery life. With just a 3,700mAh battery, it’s still very much a one-day phone, and you may even need a charger before the day is over.

But there may be hope for better battery life if the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip. The entire Galaxy S23 lineup has great battery life across the board, with even the base model S23 lasting up to two days on a single charge. That’s largely because of the power efficiency offered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Hopefully, this will help the Z Flip 5 as well.

Samsung had up to 25-watt wired and 10W wireless charging speeds with the Z Flip 4. It’s hard to tell if Samsung will provide faster charging speeds with the Z Flip 5, as the base S23 only had up to 25W, though the S23 Plus and S23 Ultra have up to 45W speeds.

On June 7, Samsung confirmed that it’s holding its next Unpacked event in “late July.” We have now confirmed that the Galaxy Unpacked July 2023 event will occur on July 26.  This will mark the 27th Unpacked that Samsung’s held, and for the first time ever, it’s taking place in the company’s hometown of Seoul, South Korea.

We can certainly expect to see the Galaxy Z Flip 5 alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 5, as well as some other devices like the Galaxy Watch 6 and Tab S9 series. Not only is the Korea location interesting, but this also means Samsung is launching its foldables a bit earlier this year. For context, the Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 weren’t announced until August 10 last year.

With the Galaxy S23 line, Samsung did not increase prices from those of its predecessor. If the Galaxy Z Flip 5 follows suit, that means it should have the same price as the Z Flip 4, which started at $999. Previous leaks have told us to expect the Flip 5 to start at $999, so there’s plenty of reason to think it’ll be launching at that price.

“Not everyone upgrades [their phone] every year. Relatively. I mean; but we'd love that to be more!” Nick Porter, vice president of product management and commercial operations at Samsung U.K. and Ireland, laughed as we talked about the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 just ahead of the official launch over a Microsoft Teams call.

3 reasons I’m disappointed by the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 with its main display open.

During its Galaxy Unpacked July 2023 event, Samsung dropped a bunch of new products for everyone — from next-generation foldable phones to new wearables and a diverse range of tablets. One of the new device reveals was the Galaxy Z Flip 5, which has been expected along with the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

Though I’m still fairly new to the scene of foldables, I have seen the appeal — and in some cases, I prefer the form factor over the standard glass slab that most phones are nowadays. But honestly, there isn’t a lot with the new Galaxy Z Flip 5 that’s drawing me in. Instead, it’s a bit underwhelming.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro was an oddball product when it launched, and now that the excellent Galaxy Watch 6 Classic is here, it only emphasizes what a huge misstep the Watch 5 Pro actually was.

Yet rather than letting it fade into the past, Samsung is keeping the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro around in the range. Why? I’ve got absolutely no idea.
