Samsung to offer two add-on lenses for the Galaxy Note 7

Of the handful of rumored accessories expected to be released alongside the Galaxy Note 7, a dedicated case designed to hold specialized lenses was not one of them. But, lo and behold, it’s here alongside a pair of lenses.

Seen in the “accessories” section of its website, Samsung has shared the first glimpse of an anti-slip case designed to securely mount lenses atop the Galaxy Note 7’s 12-megapixel camera.

Other than the renderings and a paragraph of marketing copy, not much information has been shared about the case and accompanying lenses. But, from the images, at least a few details can be gathered.

Note 7 Lens Add On 2

According to Samsung’s website, there will be two add-on lenses available: a telephoto and a wide-angle.

If we’re to take the 26mm equivalent focal length of of the Galaxy Note 7’s rear camera, the 16x lens attachment would make for a 416mm equivalent focal length – pretty impressive telephoto capabilities for a smartphone. The second lens attachment shown is a 108-degree wide-angle lens.

It’s hard to figure out exactly how these will affect image quality without taking them for a spin, but it’s safe to say it’ll reduce it at least a little bit. The lens attachments will also affect the low-light capabilities, even with the Note 7’s fast f/1.7 aperture.

The lenses should prove useful, however, both for still photographers looking to utilize the impressive 12-megapixel camera, as well as its 4K video capabilities.

No information has been shared as to the price or release date of the case and lens attachments. When reached for comment, Samsung told us they don’t have any information to share at this time, but we will update this article once information becomes available. The phone goes on sale on August 19.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: two things I hate (and two I love)
Main display on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5.

Samsung is in its fifth generation of selling foldables. While the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is its biggest upgrade to the clamshell form factor, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is an experiential upgrade this year – which might cause some problems for Samsung.

The year is 2023, and more smartphone manufacturers are joining the foldable bandwagon. With the Google Pixel Fold and the upcoming OnePlus folding phone, Samsung finally has some competition in the U.S. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 doesn’t seem like a device that I would instantly buy over others.

Samsung has unveiled its newest foldable smartphones — the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. Both the new Fold and the Flip come with significant improvements, including a thinner profile, a new hinge mechanism that keeps the phones shut tight when folded, and a bespoke Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 "for Galaxy" chipset. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 clamshell also earns a new flex-worthy design upgrade over last year's Galaxy Z Flip 4 with its new and larger 3.4-inch outer display. It can now run numerous full-size apps and supports full keyboard input.

The improved hinge and the new display on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 sure make the clamshell phone desirable. On top of that, Samsung's proactive approach with frequent software updates -- and the promise of four Android platform upgrades and five years of security updates -- make the Flip 5 highly desirable to those who wish for a compact and swanky phone. Starting at just a penny short of $1,000, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is also one of the lightest purchases on the pocket for anyone who wants to try folding smartphones.

Is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 waterproof?
Back of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is the slimmest and lightest Galaxy Fold device yet. And it's also the most technically capable, offering a new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, a brighter inner display, slightly improved cameras, and more. But did the thinner and lighter design have any impact on the Fold 5's water resistance?

Last year's Galaxy Z Fold 4 offered an IPX8 rating for water resistance, not waterproofing. The two terms are used interchangeably every now and then, but there’s a clear difference between the two. Does the Z Fold 5 keep that IPX8 water resistance rating? Does it have something better? Something worse? Here's what you need to know.
