Samsung Pay celebrates one year with a whopping 100 million transactions processed

bixby samsung ai assistant pay
It looks like Samsung Pay can hold its own against the likes of Apple Pay and Android Pay. Samsung recently announced that only one year after the launch of its mobile payment service, it has handled a hefty 100 million transactions.

Not only is Samsung Pay being used a lot, but it’s being used in a lot of places too — Samsung Pay is being used in a total of seven different countries, and the company is prepping for a major expansion of the service later this month.

Of course, Samsung Pay doesn’t come close to the number of payments handled by Apple Pay, which accounts for roughly 75 percent of mobile payments in the U.S. Still, Apple Pay had almost a year head start on its Android rivals, Samsung Pay and Android Pay.

So just how much money is represented by 100 million transactions? According to Samsung, a whopping 2 trillion South Korean won has been handled by the service, which equates to around $1.78 billion. That’s no small feat.

“Since its introduction a year ago, Samsung Pay continues to lead mobile payments by providing services that are simple, secure and virtually anywhere,” says Injong Rhee, CTO and EVP of Software and Services for the Mobile Communications Business at Samsung, in a blog post. “Our ambition to reach a world without wallets continues to draw ever closer, and this strong consumer adoption signals a shift in behavior and demonstrates the continued enthusiasm for a safer, smarter and better mobile wallet.”

Of course, Samsung Pay still has work to do. The payment service is, as mentioned, only available in seven countries, though expansion is expected. Not only that, but the service will likely continue to expand until all banks are included in the service, so as many people as possible can use it.

Must-have accessories for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3
Samsung Galaxy folding phones.

These days, smartphones don't ship with a ton of goodies packed in the box; long gone are the days of free earbuds and chargers. Today, you're mostly on your own. Aside from the phone itself, you're going to need some basic things if you bought a Galaxy Z Flip 3 or a Z Fold 3 for yourself or a loved one. Samsung and its various vendor friends offer some smart accessories for its newest foldable phones. Here are some of the items to consider for the full functionality of the Samsung Galaxy Fold or Flip.
DearHot 15W Qi Wireless Car Charger Mount Holder

The Qi Wireless Car Charger -- featuring 15W fast wireless charging -- combines an air vent phone holder with a wireless car charger. Its intelligent chip protects your phone from overcharging, going over current, short-circuiting, and overheating. Extra-wide clips hold the Z Fold3 tightly in place as you drive. After you place the phone, the phone holder automatically clamps and starts charging. Press the button on the body, and the phone holder releases the clamp.  You can mount the phone holder on your dashboard, air vent, or on the window. Padded with soft non-slip and shock absorption silicone, the clips protect the car vents and your phone from scratches and keep it stable. You can operate it safely with a single hand via a 360-degree rotatable ball.

Samsung’s Android 12 and One UI 4 update comes to the Galaxy Z Flip and Fold 3
One UI 4 and Android 12.

Samsung has made Android 12 and One UI 4 available to the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 just weeks after releasing the update to the Samsung Galaxy S21 family. The update has dropped first in the company's native Korea, but will likely be making a worldwide rollout in the next week or so.

As with the S21's release that came last month, One UI 4 and Android 12 bring enhanced customization and security features to Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3 owners. These include a new feature that themes your phone with the color of your wallpaper, customizable emoji, and more. Privacy wise, OneUI 4 owners will now see indicators when their cameras or microphones are in use, preventing apps from accessing those clandestinely.

We compared Samsung’s One UI 4 against Android 12 on the Google Pixel 6 Pro
One UI 4 and Android 12.

When it reached version 3, Samsung’s One UI become one of the best Android interfaces available, due to its coherent design, customization options, varied features, and impressive turn of speed. I enjoyed using it more than Android 11. However, now Android 12 is here, and it’s such a big step forward, it instantly made One UI 3 feel aged, a bit ugly, and slightly ponderous by comparison.

Samsung’s OneUI 4 is based on Android 12 and has now started to arrive on the Galaxy S21, the Galaxy S21 Plus, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra. With the update installed on the Galaxy S21 Ultra, I’ve been using it alongside the Pixel 6 Pro to see if Samsung’s new software can help bring back the phone’s luster, and keep it competing with Google's latest smartphone.
What do I want to see?
One UI 4 is never going to be identical to Android 12 on the Google Pixel, and that’s fine. Not only are there elements of the software that are exclusive to the Pixel, but Samsung will want to maintain its individuality and promote its own apps and services through its own interface. I don’t want it to be the same either. What I want is for Samsung to have selected some of the best parts of Android 12 and integrated them with OneUI 4, and then given the rest a typically polished Samsung spin.
