Samsung isn’t done turning back the clock: Surprisingly powerful flip phone spotted

With more people moving on to smartphones, it’s a treat to learn that companies like Samsung still continue to churn out flip phones. Unlike the company’s straightforward Master series of phones, however, the SM-G9198, spotted by FoneArena, looks to be a full-featured flip phone for the masses.

Starting on the outside, the G9198 features two 3.91-inch, 768 x 1,280 resolution displays on the inside and the outside of the phone — relatively large displays for such a form factor. There is a 5-megapixel camera on the front for selfies and video calling, while you’ll find a 16-megapixel camera on the back. Right next to the rear camera is an LED flash module and, interestingly enough, a heart rate sensor that was first seen in the Galaxy S5.

Samsung-SM-G9198More interesting are the surprisingly powerful internals, with the G9198 powered by a 1.8GHz hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor. This is the same processor featured in LG’s 2015 flagship, the G4, though the G9198 pairs the processor with 2GB of RAM versus the G4’s 3GB. Continuing to look under the hood reveals 16GB of internal storage, though it’s expandable through the phone’s MicroSD card slot.

The G9198 even features 4G LTE connectivity and Samsung’s TouchWiz on top of Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. No release or pricing information was revealed, though odds are the phone will remain in the East.

Regardless of how many people currently use smartphones, flip phones are experiencing a renaissance of sorts. In Japan, flip phone shipments rose in 2014 for the first time in seven years, while smartphone shipments in 2014 saw a 5.3 percent decrease from 2013 to 27.7 million units. There are several reasons for this surging popularity, some of which include flip phones’ ability to hold a charge longer than smartphones and being more durable than their smarter brethren. In addition, Japan’s low birth rate, combined with the rapidly increasing aging population, means there are more elderly consumers who don’t need everything a smartphone offers.

I really hope this iPhone 15 Pro price leak isn’t true
Render of the iPhone 15 Pro in red.

We’re just a few months away from Apple revealing the next-generation iPhone 15 lineup in the fall. However, a new report from Chinese outlet Economic Daily News suggests that the entire lineup could see a price increase of 10% to 20%.

This isn’t great news. For the standard iPhone 15, that means it could start at $899, which is $100 more than the starting price for the current $799 iPhone 14. Currently, the iPhone 14 Pro starts at $999, but with this price increase for the next generation, the iPhone 15 Pro could be $100 to $200 more — starting at $1,100 or $1,200.

I put the iPhone’s Dynamic Island on my Pixel 7 Pro — and I can’t go back
The expanded DynamicSpot Dynamic Island at the top of the Pixel 7 Pro.

The Apple iPhone 14 Pro got a big refresh last year, and key to that was a new selfie camera design with a pill-shaped cutout. Only, this is no normal hole -- it's the home of a new feature, the oddly-named "Dynamic Island." It's a notification bubble that lives behind the selfie camera that displays information like music tracks, timers, and anything else you need to know, but don't need a full screen for. If you're playing music on Spotify, it'll display the track name and controls. If someone calls you, it'll show the person's contact information. Waiting for an Uber? It'll show you how far away it is. It's even tied into the Face ID unlock process. It's a great use of the selfie camera — and one with a bright future.

At least, that's what we thought. The Dynamic Island has had a tough start, as app support was extremely limited, meaning it didn't live up to Apple's promises. This persisted for a number of months before the Dynamic Island finally got what it needed to live up to its hype.

OnePlus just announced during its “From Fast & Smooth to Beyond” panel at MWC 2023 that it will be launching its first foldable smartphone this year. While OnePlus launched the OnePlus 11 earlier this month, it has revealed plans for its first foldable smartphone in the second half of 2023.

“Our first foldable phone will have the signature OnePlus fast and smooth experience. It must be a flagship phone that doesn’t settle because of its folding form, in terms of industrial design, mechanical technology, and other aspects. We want to launch a device that aims to be at the pinnacle experience of today’s foldable market.” said Kinder Liu, President, and COO of OnePlus, at the event.
