Now you can listen to A Game of Thrones, Fifty Shades of Grey, and more audiobooks on Scribd

Ebook subscription services are growing bigger every day, but so far Scribd is the only one that offers an impressive audiobook collection. Recently, Scribd added more than 9,000 new audiobooks to its offerings, including several blockbuster titles like A Game of Thrones, Wild, Gone Girl, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo seriesand many more.

The new audiobooks come to Scribd through a new deal with Penguin Random House Audio, and these titles bring its audiobook library up to more than 45,000. Popular titles like The Girl on the Train, Fifty Shades of Grey, Gone Girl, Wild, The Help, The Blind Side, and many others are now included. Also, many of the books are narrated by superstars like Bill Clinton (he didn’t do Fifty Shades of Grey), Christopher Plummer, Diane Keaton, Barbara Walters, Kate Winslet, and more.

In addition to these more popular titles, Scribd added great children’s books such as Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret by Judy Blume; A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle; The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman; The Maze Runner by James Dasher, and more. For the politically inclined, Scribd threw a few presidential memoirs in there, too. Scribd has seen growth ever since it added audiobooks, the company reveals.

“Penguin Random House Audio is one of the world’s most admired publishers, and we are excited to work with them to expand the potential audience for audiobooks by putting thousands of their amazing titles at readers’ fingertips,” Trip Adler, the co-founder and CEO of Scribd said in a statement. “Since we launched audiobooks last fall, reading time on Scribd has doubled. This is great news for Scribd and for our publishing partners.”

All of those audiobooks, plus the 1 million-plus ebooks on Scribd, are available to subscribers for just $9 a month. Considering how expensive audiobooks are to buy, as are comparable subscriptions from the likes of Audible and others, Scribd’s price is appealing. And it’s lower than its main competitor, Oyster, which doesn’t offer audiobooks at all.

Google announced on Wednesday the first beta release of Android 12L, the next feature drop for the recently released Android 12 operating system. Aimed primarily at tablets and larger-screened devices, Android 12L will focus on changing the Android experience from the much-critiqued blown-up-phone look to a discrete experience that takes the larger canvas of tablets into account.
What's new?
Today's beta release includes the refreshed interface for larger screens, including a column view for the notification shade and lock screen. A new multitasking dock is being introduced to allow faster access to split-screen and drag-and-drop, and Google's now done work to allow every Android 12 app to work with split-screen mode regardless of whether developers have built for it.

The big problem with big-screen Android
Unlike iOS, the Android experience on tablets and larger-screened devices has been abysmal. It's a little understandable when one considers that Google shifted its tablet focus from Android to Chrome OS a few years ago. While Chrome OS currently has a decent tablet experience, one that the current Android 12L seems to want to replicate when looking at the dock and split-screen multitasking, the app experience for both has remained lacking.

Android Apps on Windows 11

Android apps arrived on Windows 11 not too long ago, but there's still one big issue: Windows only supports the Amazon Android app store, which has less than a fourth of the apps that can be found on Google Play. But there's a solution in the form of WSATools, a utility from engineering student Simone Franco that not only allows you to install any Android app, but also makes the process much easier.

Around the time of the announcement of Windows 11, we received confirmation that users would be able to sideload, or unofficially install, any Android app on Windows 11. The problem is that the process is tedious. It requires multiple downloads from separate sources, a lot of tweaking, and some time in the command line.
