At Mobile World Congress last year, we were impressed by the Sony Xperia Tablet Z, a sleek, speedy, well-made, and interesting Android tablet, which was something of a rarity at the time. According to a new leak, Sony will launch a sequel to the Tablet Z, perhaps called the Xperia Tablet Z2, at this year’s show.
The leak includes an extensive run down of the tablet’s potential spec sheet. Apparently, the screen will be another Sony Triluminos panel, and measure 10.1-inches with a 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution. Like almost every other top-end device these days, a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor will power it, but it could benefit from having 3GB of RAM alongside.
A pair of cameras are also promised. An 8-megapixel on the rear, and a more ordinary 2-megapixel camera on the front. Although the leak only mentions a 16GB version, Sony offered the Tablet Z in both 16GB and 32GB versions, plus a MicroSD card slot should be fitted to the 6.4mm thick chassis.
The Tablet Z’s primary claim to fame is its bath-friendly waterproof build, something Sony gleefully demonstrated on its booth in 2013 with machines systematically dunking the tablet in tubs of water. The Tablet Z2 should retain this cool feature. Finally, Sony will send out the tablet with Android 4.4 KitKat already installed.
Reading through the specs above, you may be struggling to see what’s going to change over the existing Tablet Z. The screen size, resolution, and the camera setup are all identical. However, there are some important internal alterations, as the Tablet Z uses a Snapdragon S4 Pro processor running at 1.5GHz, and only has 2GB of RAM to help it out, plus it came with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean installed. If the Xperia Tablet Z2 does turn out to be 6.4mm thick, Sony will have shaved a half-millimeter off the Tablet Z’s thickness.
Mobile World Congress begins on February 24, and although Sony hasn’t called a press conference yet, there have been rumors it’ll be holding a get-together on the show’s first day. We’ll bring you more news when we have it.
