Insanely powerful, 4K, octa-core Xperia Z4 Tablet Ultra leaks out

sony xperia z4 tablet ultra news
A leak has apparently revealed the Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet Ultra, and if the accompanying specs are accurate, it could be one of the most powerful tablets we’ve seen. According to Chinese site PadNews, the Z4 Tablet Ultra will have a huge 12.9-inch screen, making it larger than the Surface Pro 3 and Samsung’s biggest Galaxy Pro model. However, the screen size isn’t the only eyebrow-raising stat on the feature list.

Before we go through the possible specs, keep in mind this is an unofficial report, and could be nothing more than someone’s idle dream about a killer Sony tablet. PadNews says the 12.9-inch Triluminos screen will have a 3840 x 2400 pixel count, which is accepted as a 4K resolution, and way more than we’re used to seeing on a tablet. It’s higher than Retina MacBook Pro, and exceeds that of 4K laptops from Acer and Lenovo.

Xperia Z4 Tablet Ultra Leak SpecsAn octa-core, 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor supposedly powers the Z4 Tablet Ultra, along with 6GB of RAM, apparently. Only one 8-megapixel camera is listed, and it’s not clear whether that’s expected to be on the front or rear of the tablet. It’ll possibly be joined by 64GB of internal memory, an HDMI-out, PS4 Remote Play, support for Sony’s Hi-Res Audio files, and S-Force front mounted speakers.

Too good to be true?

The whopping tablet may be powered by an equally gigantic 12100mAh battery, stuffed inside an 8.6mm thick chassis. If the picture of the Z4 Tablet Ultra is genuine, Sony has stuck with its OmniBalance design language, ensuring it looks like a very large Xperia smartphone. There’s no mention of the price, but the words bargain and reasonable probably won’t apply.

Is it real? We’ve no idea at this stage. Rumors have spread Sony is working on the Xperia Z4 smartphone, plus a couple of possible spin-offs, so the name isn’t unlikely. Sony impressed us with the Xperia Z3 Compact launched in September, and we’ve enjoyed using the previous Xperia Z2 Tablet; so the prospect of a giant, all-powerful slate from the company is a tantalizing one. However, these specs are so high, it’s hard to take them seriously. We’re willing to be surprised though.

Sony has an event planned for early January at CES, but the PadNews report says it’s unsure if the Z4 Tablet Ultra will be revealed on the day. We’ll keep you updated on the Z4 Tablet Ultra, but don’t be disappointed if it turns out not to be nothing more than a crazy spec wish list.

Before you head to the app store on your phone to buy a voice-recording app, take a moment to consider the apps that may already be installed on your phone. Why? In my experience, they're likely all you really need. I’ve recorded interviews and voice-overs for work for years, and I’ve found the two best examples come preinstalled on your phone already, so they’re entirely free to use.

Google Pixel Tablet on its charging dock.

Tablets are a dime-a-dozen these days, with offerings from all the great brands including Apple, Samsung, Lenovo, and more. So, if you really want to stand out in a sea of similar tech, you need to do things a little differently. That's what Google's Pixel Tablet offers. How? It comes with a unique speaker dock that can be used to both charge the device and offer room-filling sound -- almost like a smart speaker add-on. Better yet, when your Pixel Tablet is docked it benefits from the Hub Mode, turning the device into a smart display, with digital photo frame support, smart home controls, and hands-free Google functionality. Of course, it could set you back at full price, normally $499 unless you find it included in a roundup of the best Google Pixel deals. Well, guess what? Thanks to a Best Buy Google Pixel Tablet deal, you can get it today for $439 and save $60. Hurry, though, it's part of Best Buy's recent 48-hour sale so it won't stick around for long.

Why you should buy the Google Pixel Tablet
Okay, okay, so in our Google Pixel Tablet review, Joe Maring did give it less than stellar remarks, but he called out its reliable fingerprint sensor, comfortability during use and excellent speaker dock. Honestly, how many tablets come with a matching speaker dock that transforms the entire experience? This tablet also marks a "lot of firsts" for Google, as it's the first tablet from the company in nearly five years, the first Android tablet in eight years, and can be converted into a smart home display with the speaker dock. All of which are notable milestones.
