Sprint launches the Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport, rolls out LTE to 28 cities

Sprint has just launched a health and fitness version of the Samsung Galaxy S5. The Sprint-exclusive device, called Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport, is the product of the carrier’s collaboration with Samsung, Under Armour, and Mapmyfitness.

The phone comes loaded with fitness tracking features that previously appeared in the Galaxy S5 and AT&T’s Galaxy S5 Active. It has S Health, a feature that allows users to access health information, plan workouts, track food intake, and monitor heart rate. The Galaxy S5 Sport also has the Activity Zone app that first appeared on the Galaxy S5 Active. The app, which is basically an extension of S Health, contains a barometer, compass, flashlight, and stopwatch.

Not much is different between the Galaxy S5 Sport and the Galaxy S5 Active. In fact, aside from the phones’ pre-loaded apps, the two devices are basically the same. The main difference is Sprint Fit Live. The app provides a free 12-month subscription to MapMyFitness MVP, which has features such as audio coaching, training plans, and live tracking. Sprint customers who are on the carrier’s Framily plans also get a free six month subscription to Spotify Premium. The free subscription is also provided to other Sprint customers, but the offer period gets cut down to just three months.

Aside from the new smartphone, the carrier has also announced that it is expanding its LTE service to 28 more cities, including San Jose, California, Hartford, Connecticut and Bangor, Maine. The new additions push the company’s LTE network to 471 cities.

Sprint also announced that it has expanded the coverage for Sprint Spark, which promises peak wireless speeds of 60mbps, to three new cities, namely St. Louis, Missouri and Winston-Salem and Greensboro in North Carolina. The new additions mean that the company’s enhanced LTE service is now available in 27 cities, including Los Angeles, Miami, and New York.

The Galaxy S5 Sport, which comes in Electric Blue and Cherry Red colors, can be purchased with $0 down and 24 monthly payments of $27.09. Starting July 25, people who buy the Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport will also get a $50 discount for the Samsung Gear Fit.
