Survey says 5 percent of Android users will switch to the iPhone 6

How attached are you to that Android phone of yours? Research specialists Survata have been asking users about the upcoming iPhone 6 launch over the last couple of days, and found that a mere 5 percent of Android users were “very likely” to switch to iOS with the launch of the iPhone 6 on Tuesday.

12.4 percent said they were “somewhat likely” to jump from Google’s mobile operating system to Apple’s equivalent, so perhaps when we all finally get a look at the new handset, the exodus from Android will be a little larger. On the other hand, the new iPhone might be completely underwhelming and attract very few converts at all.

Enthusiasm among existing iPhone owners was much higher. More than a third of iPhone 5 owners (36 percent), most of whom are presumably coming to the end of a two-year contract, said they were very likely to make the upgrade when the new model is available. For the iPhone 5c and the iPhone 5s the figures were 15 percent and 18 percent respectively.

And what about the BlackBerry and Windows Phone users? Just 6 percent of BlackBerry users said they were very likely to make the jump to the iPhone 6, while Windows Phone users are the most loyal of all: Just 3 percent of people running a Microsoft-powered handset expressed a strong desire to change to the new iOS phone instead.

As we’ve already alluded to, all of this could change once we see how life-changing or otherwise the iPhone 6 is; still, it’s an interesting gauge of how much enthusiasm Apple has managed to drum up in the weeks leading up to the big reveal. Survata spoke to 889 respondents through a Web survey between the 2nd and 4th of September.

Your next iPhone may have no bezels. Here’s why that could be a problem

Don’t believe everything you see, but there’s a certain joy in imagining products with a futuristic touch to them. One such fantastical element of the smartphone industry is a truly bezel-free all-screen phone. And as implausible as that sounds, it looks like Apple might be the one to achieve it — and at the biggest scale imaginable.

According to South Korean outlet The Elec, Apple has reportedly asked, “Samsung Display and LG Display to develop an OLED that removes all front bezels from the iPhone.” Apple has been painfully slow at eliminating the bezel on iPhones and continues to sell the iPhone SE (2022), which should ideally exist in an era that is half a decade too persistent.
