T-Mobile launched a gratis data promotion for folks headed to the Summer Olympics in Rio, and it’s now extending that generosity a bit further. On Thursday, the Magenta carrier announced that it would offer “free unlimited high-speed data” for customers in Brazil through the end of the Paralympic Games, September 18.

Here’s the nitty-gritty: T-Mobile’s postpaid subscribers — that is to say, customers on its Simple Choice plan — will have access to a speedy, 4G LTE cellular connection “wherever they go in Brazil.” Calls won’t cost a dime, either, as long as they’re placed to numbers in the U.S. and Brazil. And text messaging is free worldwide.

“We are proud to support America’s finest in Rio and make it easier than ever for their families to share every moment of their experience!” said T-Mobile chief John Legere in a statement. “These athletes have trained hard, and we want their families to stream, snap and share this historic experience without worrying about coming home to a ridiculous wireless phone bill.”

Free data and calls aren’t the only philanthropic gesture T-Mobile is making. The Un-carrier will provide free service to family members of Team USA Paralympic athletes and cool gadgets with which to use it: a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and Samsung Gear 360 camera. “[We’re] making it super simple for Un-carrier customers, plus athletes and their family members, to capture every incredible moment of the Paralymic games and share it with everyone back home,” said T-Mobile.

The Paralympic promotion is the latest benefit to hit the Un-carrier’s plans. In July, it exempted traffic from Pokémon Go, the hit mobile augmented reality game, from customers’ data plan limits. In June, it launched a wider-ranging program, T-Mobile Tuesdays. Every Tuesday, postpaid subscribers get bonuses like free pizza, movie tickets, dessert discounts, and ridesharing coupons. It continues to grant subscribers free music and standard-definition video streaming through its Music Freedom and Binge On promotions, respectively.

Those discounts, free data, and more have done the Magenta carrier well, if its most recent earnings call is any indication. In the second quarter of this year, it topped analysts’ expectations with $9.2 billion in revenue, up 12.2 percent year over year. It added 1.9 million customers, and delivered the best postpaid phone churn numbers — or the percentage of subscribers over the quarter who canceled cell service — in its history (1.27 percent).

T-Mobile just achieved 3Gbps 5G speeds — without mmWave
Speedtest results on a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.

T-Mobile is setting out to prove that carriers don’t need to deploy extremely high-frequency mmWave technology to get blazing fast speeds. Thanks to Carrier Aggregation technology, the “Un-carrier” has demonstrated performance of 3Gbps download speeds on good old-fashioned low-band and mid-band 5G channels.

In a press release today, T-Mobile revealed that it has reached these unprecedented speeds for the first time ever on a commercial device; in this case, a Samsung Galaxy S22 powered by a Snapdragon X65 modem. “This test demonstrates the incredible power of mid-band spectrum and represents another huge step forward for stand-alone 5G,” said Neville Ray, President of Technology at T-Mobile.

You don’t need a gaming phone to seriously love mobile games
asus rog phone 5 review game genie

As an avid gaming enthusiast, mobile gaming has always appealed to me. However, despite my best efforts to get into gaming on my phone, I butted heads with it just about every step of the way because I found touchscreen controls to be truly awful. I figured that, unfortunately, enjoying games on a phone was reserved for people with the cash to buy luxury gaming phones with fancy shoulder buttons.

I couldn't have been more wrong, and the solution was right in front of my face.
Early disappointment
Mobile gaming has been exciting for years, but I never quite felt like I was part of it for the longest time. This is partly because I didn’t end up with a smartphone until I was roughly 16 years old in 2014, and by this time I felt like I missed a lot of the app-based fun that I was constantly reading about online. By the time I did get a smartphone, a hand-me-down iPhone 4, I still didn’t really have a device capable of playing the cutting-edge titles being released as mobile gaming got more serious.

T-Mobile celebrates 1 million 5G home internet customers
T-Mobile smartphone.

Following the commercial launch of its at-home internet services in April 2021, T-Mobile is celebrating its 1-millionth home internet customer just one year later. The company's stated goals when launching the service were to bring the fast internet speeds of its 5G mobile plans to home routers, and its been widely successful. On top of its 1 million customers, T-Mobile boasts that an additional 10 million households in the U.S. are eligible for its 5G home internet plan as well.

While the company is taking a moment to celebrate the major milestone, it recognizes that there's still much more work to be done before all Americans are connected via 5G. T-Mobile points out that over 40 million U.S. citizens still don't have access to high-speed home connections and a significant portion that do only have one service provider as an option. T-Mobile aims to be another choice for those feeling like they're out of luck when it comes to home internet.
