T-Mobile Rolls Out New myTouch 3G Version

T-Mobile has pushed out a few limited editions of the myTouch 3G—most recently the Eric Clapton Fender Limited Edition—but today the wireless carrier has unveiled a whole new version of the phone, also calling it the myTouch 3G. So all of those people who have the current edition of the Android-powered myTouch 3G, you now have to refer to your smartphones as the “original myTouch 3G.”

We’re not joking—T-Mobile declared in its official statement today that “the new device will simply be called the T-Mobile myTouch 3G and will replace the original T-Mobile myTouch 3G.” We think it should be called “the smartphone formerly known as the T-Mobile’s myTouch 3G,” but that is quite the mouthful.

According to T-Mobile, the new myTouch offers 288 MB of RAM and an 8GB microSD card, Swype for faster text input, as well as built-in 3.5mm headset jack and updated music player. The new myTouch also includes all of Google’s Android phone perks like access to all of their services, including Google Search by voice, Picasa and YouTube.

T-Mobile says the myTouch 3G is now available at select T-Mobile locations and online for $149.99 including a two-year contract agreement.

There are a lot of financial deterrents this year keeping people from planning summer vacations, but T-Mobile is determined to help subscribers take the vacations they've been dreaming of with its newly announced Coverage Beyond initiative. In short, Coverage Beyond aims to reduce the cost of traveling for T-Mobile's most popular coverage plans by giving subscribers three great perks: free 5G data abroad, free streaming while on flights, and a handful of other travel perks like reduced gas prices.

Some of T-Mobile's previous connection efforts gave its customers limited free low-speed data and free texting while abroad. This was a good way to reduce the stress of being out of the country for a short period, but Coverage Abroad ups the ante by offering 5GB of high-speed data to all Magenta Max and Business Unlimited Ultimate plan owners in 210 countries. In countries where it's available, that "high-speed" data may even be 5G. Magenta and most other business plan owners can also count on free high-speed international data, but only in 11 select European countries.

T-Mobile is setting out to prove that carriers don’t need to deploy extremely high-frequency mmWave technology to get blazing fast speeds. Thanks to Carrier Aggregation technology, the “Un-carrier” has demonstrated performance of 3Gbps download speeds on good old-fashioned low-band and mid-band 5G channels.

In a press release today, T-Mobile revealed that it has reached these unprecedented speeds for the first time ever on a commercial device; in this case, a Samsung Galaxy S22 powered by a Snapdragon X65 modem. “This test demonstrates the incredible power of mid-band spectrum and represents another huge step forward for stand-alone 5G,” said Neville Ray, President of Technology at T-Mobile.
