Sprint customers can now get $200 credit for every line switched to T-Mobile

It wasn’t enough for T-Mobile CEO John Legere to publicly criticize Sprint’s “half-off” deal on Twitter and Periscope. This week, as a part of its Un-carrier Unwrapped month of gifts, T-Mobile is offering an extra $200 to Sprint customers for every line they switch to T-Mobile.

T-Mobile’s offer covers postpaid, prepaid, Boost, and Virgin Mobile Sprint numbers. Starting November 26, when Sprint customers switch to T-Mobile’s Simple Choice postpaid plan, a $200 credit per line will automatically be added to their bill. It will also cover Early Termination Fees (ETFs) of up to $650 per line or the balance Sprint users owe on their phones. The Un-carrier is also offering families of four Unlimited 4G LTE data for just $45 a line.

“I cannot think of any wireless customers in more desperate need of some holiday cheer than those Sprint customers still hanging on over there,” said Legere in the blogpost. “Those poor people have put up with the nation’s slowest and smallest LTE network, and their carrier is throwing out a deal-of-the-month for everyone except them. We know Sprint’s customers love T-Mobile when they switch, so this holiday season, we’re taking away every barrier and cost to coming over to the Un-carrier and America’s fastest 4G LTE network.”

Legere is referring to Sprint’s offer to halve your phone bill if you switch from Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. Although it could be a good deal for new customers, existing Sprint users didn’t get much to reward them for their loyalty. Sprint only offered its current customers the $10 Family Share Access Plan and $15 for its 1GB plan with a year of free service, along with a free 7-inch Alcatel One Touch Pixi tablet.

In contrast, T-Mobile is offering an entire month of deals to its customers and those who switch. The first gift of Un-carrier Unwrapped month gives customers on the Simple Choice plans free unlimited LTE data for three months beginning on December 1. The announcement says the following weeks will see the company offering “gifts” to Verizon and AT&T customers to give them an incentive to move to T-Mobile.

The carrier also unveiled its Black Friday deals earlier this week, which include $100 off a Samsung tablet if you buy any Samsung phone and more.

T-Mobile really wants to get the public in favor of the merger between it and Sprint. The company announced that if the merger with Sprint goes through, it will offer 10 years of free, unlimited 5G service to first responders.

The program will reportedly be called the "Connecting Heroes Initiative," and is part of a larger "5G for Good" plan that the company hopes to build. Through the program, State and local public first responders can sign up to receive coverage. Those agencies can actually sign up right now, and will get the coverage if the merger closes in the next year.

The Federal Communications Commission has officially approved the merger between T-Mobile and Sprint. A few weeks ago, the FCC voted to approve the deal, but now it has released its official approval order and statements on the merger.

In the statements released by the FCC, the Commission made it clear that the approval was largely in an effort to create stronger 5G networks in the U.S. T-Mobile and Sprint have long argued that a merger would speed up the rollout of 5G, and it seems like the FCC agrees. The vote was approved 3-2, with the three Republican members voting in favor and two Democrats opposed.

The T-Mobile/Sprint merger is one step closer to becoming a reality. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has formally voted to approve the merger, just a few months after the Department of Justice (DOJ) gave its approval.

The news isn't all that surprising. In May, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said he would vote for the merger as long as the two companies committed to a fast rollout of 5G tech. Other Republican commissioners also signaled support for the merger. The two Democratic commissioners on the FCC have voiced disapproval for the merger, with one commissioner, Jessica Rosenworcel, penning an op-ed about it in the Atlantic earlier today.
