TCL 20 series expands with new 20 Pro 5G, 20L+, and 20L

TCL is expanding its phone lineup a little. The company has announced three new models in the TCL 20 series, including the new TCL 20 Pro, TCL 20L, and TCL 20L+. The new devices are built to offer premium specs at a low price, and continue the company’s focus on an excellent display experience through its NXTVISION tech.

TCL 20 Pro 5G

The TCL 20 Pro is at the top end of TCL’s new phone offerings. The device is built to offer a flagship experience at a cheaper price. It has a big display powered by the company’s self-built NXTVISION 2.0, along with a versatile camera and enough performance for most people.

TCL has been focusing heavily on its display tech over the past few years, and NXTVISION 2.0 is the culmination of that effort. The display on the TCL 20 Pro is 6.67 inches, and TCL says it uses artificial intelligence to adjust color, contrast, and sharpness for an ideal viewing experience.

Powering the device is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G processor, coupled with 6GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The Snapdragon 750G may not be as powerful as the likes of the Snapdragon 888, but it has proven itself as a solid lower-cost alternative.

The camera is built for versatility, too. The device has a quad camera setup, with a 48-megapixel main camera, a 16-megapixel ultrawide camera, a 5-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth camera. Unfortunately, there’s no telephoto camera here — that’s a feature that seems to be limited to more expensive phones. On the front of the device, there’s a 32-megapixel front-facing camera. Under the hood, you’ll get some interesting tech. For example, TCL offers a feature called “True Flesh Tone,” which is says makes for more natural skin tones. It’s important to note that this is display tech, not camera tech — so you may get varied results when sharing your photos.

Powering the TCL 20 Pro is a 4,500mAh battery, which is relatively large, and should get the phone through at least a day of heavy use and into the next day. It’s also the first TCL phone to support wireless charging.

The TCL 20 Pro 5G ships with Android 11, and TCL says it will get two operating system updates. The TCL 20 Pro will be available starting April 15 in the U.K., Italy, and Portugal, for 549 British pounds (or equivalent). It will roll out to other markets in the coming weeks. The company says that the device will come to the U.S. and Canada in the summer.

TCL 20L and 20L+

The TCL 20L and 20L+ are on the other end of the spectrum from the TCL 20 Pro 5G. That’s to say they’re budget-minded phones that are built to offer solid features at a much lower price.

The devices are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 processor, and the 20L has either 4GB or 6GB of storage, while the 20L+ sticks to just 6GB. While the standard TCL 20L offers 128GB of storage, the TCL 20L+ doubles that to 256GB.

Both phones also have a quad camera setup, which includes a 48-megapixel main camera, 8-megapixel ultrawide camera, 2-megapixel macro camera, and 2-megapixel depth camera.

The devices may not offer TCL’s NXTVISION tech, but they still boast interesting display tech in the form of display polarization that aims to make them easier to see while wearing sunglasses and reduce eye strain.

The TCL 20L costs 229 pounds, while the TCL 20L+ is 269 pounds. They’re both available now in the U.K., Portugal, and Italy. The TCL 20S is a North America-specific model that’s almost identical to the 20L+, and will be available soon.

You can finally buy TCL’s new midrange 30XE 5G and 30 V 5G
A product shot showing the front and rear design of the TCL 30XE 5G.

TCL kicked off 2022 by announcing two new smartphones for the U.S. market -- the TCL 30XE 5G and the TCL 30 V 5G. While the latter has been on sale for the past few weeks as a Verizon-exclusive, it is only now that TCL has revealed its plans for the 30XE 5G. Today, the company announced that the TCL 30XE 5G would be available for U.S. consumers starting February 25, 2022. The phone is available via T-Mobile and its subsidiary Metro By T-Mobile for roughly the same price.
TCL 30XE 5G
The TCL 30XE 5G makes its midrange intentions clear with specifications that include a powerful MediaTek processor, a high refresh rate display, and quad rear cameras. This is a fairly large phone with a 6.52-inch display that supports a 90Hz refresh rate, 180Hz touch sampling rate, and HDR. To keep costs down, TCL opted against equipping the phone with an FHD+ panel, so you have to make do with an HD+ (1600 x 720 pixels) panel with a V-shaped notch for the front camera.

The systen on a chip in question here is the MediaTek Dimensity 700 chip that is less than a year old and was first found doing duty on the Realme 8 5G, which launched last April. This is a reasonably efficient chip based on a 7nm manufacturing process and is more than capable of handling daily tasks without breaking a sweat. Unfortunately, the phone ships with just 64GB of internal storage (of which only 43GB is usable) with no mention of a 128GB option. Thankfully, you do get the option to slot in a microSD card and expand the storage capacity to 512GB.

TCL’s 30V 5G is coming to Verizon for $300
A press image showing the front and rear sides of the TCL 20 V 5G smartphone.

TCL is bringing another cheap 5G phone to the U.S market today, launching the TCL V30 5G for Verizon for just $300. It's not a flagship or even flagship-adjacent smartphone, it's a phone that exists to bring 5G access more cheaply -- along with some extra niceties.

Specs-wise, it's what you expect on a phone from this price range. This is a pretty large phone that comes with the close standard 6.67-inch display that you'll find on so many budget Android phones right now. It has a FullHD+ display, but there's no smooth 90Hz refresh display so users will have to make do with a 60Hz refresh.

TCL today introduced its new 30-series devices in the U.S. with the launch of two budget 5G smartphones -- the TCL 30XE 5G and 30 V 5G. These confusingly-named smartphones are the first among the eight smartphones TCL intends to launch in the country this year. While the 30XE 5G will be first available via T-Mobile before launching on other carriers, the TCL 30V 5G is a Verizon exclusive. Pricing isn't known yet but should be revealed closer to launch.
TCL 30 XE 5G

The TCL 30XE 5G is a budget smartphone that uses the octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 700 chipset that clocks up to 2.2 GHz. The device comes in a single 4GB +64GB option -- with support for a microSD card. The TCL 30XE 5G is also a fairly large phone with a 6.52-inch HD+ display that supports a 90Hz refresh rate and 180Hz touch sampling. In addition, the display gets a V-shaped notch for the front-facing camera.
