Only a matter of hours after the release of the new iPad, declarations of successful first steps in jailbreaking it were already sounding off. Fortunately for the new owners of the new iPad, three methods of jailbreaking have cropped up, and now it’s only a matter of time before a downloadable jailbreak is available to the public.

The first to claim was @Musclenerd, a member of the iPhone Dev Team (unaffiliated with Apple), who tweeted, “jailbroken iPad3: http://twitpic.com/8×48rt http://twitpic.com/8×48xg (Just a first step, still lots of work to do! No ETA!)”  and published a screenshot of root access to the new iPad and the fruit of his labor — his tablet running the Cydia Store. Note the bottom left hand corner where it states iPad 3, iOS 5.1 and Cydia 1.1.5.

Credit in part has to be given to his iPhone Dev teammates. Within the 24 hours of the iOS 5.1 update, teammate @pod2g revealed an untethered jailbreak for the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. With the new iPad running iOS 5.1 and an A5X processor (a derivative of the A5 used in those devices), you can imagine how much time was saved in rooting the latest Apple tablet.

His hack was followed by the announcement of a successful untethered jailbreak by teammate, @i0n1c, who released a video as evidence to his accomplishment:

“So Musclenerd showed pics of jailbroken ipad3 already. guess i have to show video of untethered ipad3 then…”

Finally, a Tweet by @chpwn and @phoenixdev have revealed a third successful jailbreak, and accompanying photos of the jailbroken new iPad running the Cydia Store:

“Jailbroken iPad (3), using a different method by myself and @phoenixdev: http://db.tt/mqIZmw96http://db.tt/g2UlawxV”

As stated on the iPhone Dev blog, jailbreaking the iPad 2 had similarities to jailbreaking the new iPad, which in turn also contributed to the quick jailbreaking turn around. Of course, like the iPhone Dev team reiterates, there are no promises, and the release of a public download of the New iPad’s jailbreak may not be available for a few weeks.n
